OK - I am 75 yrs old and have never seen this. Need to know if this is normal or if something is amiss.

This concerns my 4-5 yr old miniature pinscer. He was neutered when he was about five weeks old, but on occasion he has humped a pillow or a stuffed toy. Never any extension of his penis.

Last evening, I noticed him walking by and it looked as if his guts were hanging out. I then noticed it was his penis, almost touching the ground. The "knot" was also outside the penis sheath.

I was about to try finding a vet, but then it all went back in.

Question - does this indicate some sort of hernia? or is this normal and I have just never witnessed it in 3/4 of a century.

curious as to whether he needs to see a vet now, or just observe for another occurrence.

I'm pretty sure this isn't normal. My dog has been neutered for years and I've never seen anything of the sort.

My neutered dog has had some random urges to hump every so often, but that second half of your story doesn't sound very normal.

I'm no vet, but I'd get him checked out.

Thanks. I have observed him closely all day and he has shown no pain or reluctance to run. He acts as if nothing is wrong.

But, we have recently moved to Texas and I need to find a vet anyway, so I think I will get busy tomorrow and take him in.

Neutered dogs can still get boners...maybe your dog's just hung

It's just his "red rocket".

Nothing to be concerned about. My dog is neutered and his penis comes dragging out from time to time.

If you are in Arlington TX you can bring him in to my wife who is a Vet. Email me at my username at Gmail dot com.

Thanks to all - I googled the 'neutered erections' and it seems to be a normal occurrence. Cannot believe I have never seen this before - even with non-neutered dogs.

I still need to find a vet - I live in Buffalo, TX now - about halfway between Houston and Dallas on I-45.

I have a place in Buffalo and my cousin runs Davis Feed and Fertilizer. He can point you in the direction of a good vet. Walk in, ask for Thomas.

that is totally normal...unless he has some other trouble, I wouldn't worry about it at all. I am suprised you haven't seen it before...

fwiw, I would go ahead and change the pillow case before I slept on the pillow, though...

I'm about to graduate with an animal science degree and have worked at vet clinics the past few summers. I think the pup may have been neutered much too early. I was taught to neuter when the animal is sexually mature (4-7) months. The testes don't produce testosterone until this age. The premature removal of the testes most likely caused a hormone imbalance that has continued to this day. Hormone treatment should be able to fix this. Once again I'm not a vet, but this is most likely the problem.

Hmmm - I was always told to get it done way before they matured.

Maybe that is what is wrong.

Finding a vet to settle it all soon.

thanks to all.

This is true. I tell my dog to put that damn thing away. Gonna hurt someone with that baseball bat he has.
