Before the lay off, I had to sometimes fly into L.A. to get to Bakersfield. Frick L.A. Unless you are staying there for awhile, the traffic is terrible. Always, always, terrible and none of those people know how to drive. I would suggest flying into San Fransisco and doing a day there, going to The Winchester House in San Jose, then heading to Carmel. Monetary is nice (I did some kelp dives there) but nothing special. Morro Bay is cool. It is were Birds by Alfred Hitchcock was spent and like a West Coast Grand Island. The cool thing is that you can watch the sea lions in the water. Hearst Castle is really awesome and not to far from the coast. Paso Robles has nice wineries and Santa Barbara is a scenic city. Los Angeles is cool and has a lot of neat stuff to do but it takes so long to get anywhere. LAX has to be the one of the worst airports. If you can do San Fransisco to San Diego, it will be a much better trip. San Diego is nice and the airport is quick to get in and out of.

Traffic from la to San Diego is beyond awful, I'd just fly out of lax or Burbank if possible. I like the first guys idea of spending the last night in Santa Barbara, then taking pch down through Malibu and head to lax to fly out. I wouldn't recommend flying out of Santa Ana either as its about 60 miles south of LA and that means 60 miles of more traffic.

The three day limit necessarily excludes some cool stuff. I'd consider flying in and out of SFO, maybe make Carmel my base (Tickle Pink Inn) and working Monterey and Carmel and the upper 1/2 of the PCH between LA & SF. I'd probably get up early one morning and get all the way down to Hearst Castle and then work my way back.

Women generally LOVE Carmel-By-the-Sea, bring your wallet.

I have an obscenely expensive piece of beautiful furniture as a result of a visit.

Steinbeck is my man, The Log From the Sea of Cortez (1951 First Ed.) is the only rare book I own. Monterey is his old stomping grounds.

Don't come to Santa Barbara....the traffic is annoying enough.

Just kidding....if you get down towards SB, go to Buellton and eat at the Hitching Post...it's the restaurant from the movie "Sideways".

If you make it down to Santa Barbara proper, spend the day walking State St. taking the wife shopping or hang out at Butterfly, Leadbetter, or Arroyo Burro beaches. Weather is nice as frick.

I'm thinking about taking the wife (no pics) for a 3 day trip down the PCH over MLK weekend.

My rough plan at the moment is to fly into SFO around 10:30am from Atlanta

If you're going to go all the way to LA on PCH, then by all means go past Venice. Go through Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. Go all the way in to Torrance, turn off and go up through Rancho Palos Verdes. This road looks around one of the most scenic places on the coast and drops you right back off on PCH. There's some great views along Palos Verdes and you'll drive right by Trump National Golf Course.

If I were that close, no way I don't make that drive.

I did this years ago. My sister lived in SF so we drove out there from NOLA which took a week or more. We stopped at all the National Parks along the way there (and back.) After a week in SF, we drove down PCH to Los Angeles.

The one touristy thing that I wanted to do but didn't have time for was to go to Hearst Castle in San Simeon.

It was a beautiful trip.

I would just stay in SF. One day drive north up 1 to Stinson and go to Muir Woods.

Day two I'd drive down 280 to Los Gatos then take 35 down through Loma Mar into Pescadero (eat at Duartes and have the cream of green chilli soup. Up 1 back to SF.

Day three back down 280 to Santa Cruz and up into Ben Lomond. Or walk the city.

frick all that driving...you'll be leaving the most beautiful area in the US.

You've got 280 confused with 17 and 9.....but beside that I agree with much of what you said.
