I chaperoned my 4-year-old son’s preschool field trip yesterday and one boy in his class had rather extensive knowledge of putting down animals. Said his dad trapped raccoons and opossums and slit their throat with a knife to let them bleed out. He had some good gory details about it.

Also discussed using “big guns” to blow deer’s heads off to “kill em dead and eat them.”

Now, I admit being a city boy who knows nothing of the country world of “baws” where living off the land is taught at an early age. But it seemed a bit strange to me that a four year old would have been exposed to such things at that age. Maybe I’m wrong?

My little girl is 4. She has been hunting. We raise pigs, chickens and cows. We were eating some pork chops from one of our pigs. And my little girl said "Lucy sure does taste good".

I try to find the perfect age when my kids are becoming emotionally attached and can hold up a gun, then I make them kill the family pet

mine have witnessed deer skinning since they could walk

as long as you teach them that the animals are used for food and killed cleanly and humanely I dont see an issue

Why wouldn't a 4 year old be exposed to it?

Fine with teaching them about hunting, and living off the land. IMO 100% fricked up for a 4 year old to know, and likely have witnessed, his dad slit the throats of animals they don't eat like opossums.

fwiw I grew up in a family full of hunters and was exposed to killing animals for food at an early age.

I killed and cleaned a squirrels as well as fish in front of my 4 year old when she was 2. She knows where meat comes from and what it takes to get it.

It is apart of life. Someone did the same to make your hamburger you’ll eat today.

I grew up as a young kid with a pet cow I dubbed Scooby Doo. Parent's eventually butchered it and broke the news to me at dinner while eating it. They said I cried like a little bitch. I don't remember this; I think it may have traumatized me to the point of memory block

They've seen me skin deer, and pick ducks. As well as notice wounds from the arrow, bullet or shot.

Hell, my 3 year old watched me castrate a calf. I then fed the fried testicles to him. He was all smiles.

His dad may have some issues, I would just use a .22 on them. Slitting their throats is a little much.

To headshotting deer and killing trapped animals with a knife? I can remember being told to hold my ears in the stand at 3 or 4. Nothing wrong with a kid being around ethical and humane kills at a young age but the kid is either embellishing (likely) or has some trashy parents.
