Peeing was easy with the boy - I just told him he could piss in the back yard as long as no one saw his dong. Momma was mad for a few weeks on that one.

for my daughter, poo was easy, she got that down really quick
pee was hard and it took her awhile and for the longest she would just hold it till the last possible moment and then scream she had to go potty and half the time didn't make it
best advice I have is to stop putting diapers on him when ya'll are at the house and take him to the bathroom constantly until he starts telling you he has to go potty

All kids are different.. 2 of mine were trained before 2.. Hell at 18 months my oldest daughter was there.. My youngest girl though.. damn near three.
If you think women are hard to figure out... The smaller non English speaking version are worse.
Boys though, we're are nasty mofos by nature. So just give it time.

I'm not a parent, but I presume when you're tired of chasing a diaper and wiping their arse?
I mean, parenting is a butch (from what I've heard) and I'm not looking forward to the beginning... But I don't think it's brain surgery if you have common sense and have a good head on your shoulders.
Am I wrong?

Between 2 and 2.5.
Used the 3 day potty training book. Both kids were potty trained by the end of day 2.

well not exactly
if they aren't ready you will be cleaning up a lot more than just a diaper

quote:I did it in a weekend. It didn't take very long for her to get the hang of it...although the pooping part did. She held it in until she just about burst. After that, smooth sailing.
My son is 2 and a half, and I think he's ready to start potty training.
Any suggestions? Advice?

Working on 2 1/2 year old twin girls right now. One of them has it down and will come get us when it's time. The other will look you strait in the face and say no while piss is running down her leg.

We did this with our oldest when he was about 2 and a half. By the first afternoon he was telling us when he had to go potty and by the third day he wasn't pissing himself any more. It still took a few more days after that for him to get the pooping right, but since then he's been poop accident free.
It was pretty much this. LINK

Since everybody else had it so easy, I'll give you my horror story (and a lesson in life of what NOT to do).
At about 2, son's daycare said they were going to start potty training, and that the ONLY kids who weren't successful were the ones who's parents didn't work with them at home, but it was really easy. Put them on the potty and MAKE THEM sit for 3-4 minutes. They may not want to stay that long, but DO NOT let them get up for several minutes- Even if you have to force them to stay on the potty, do whatever you have to do.
This was our first kid, so we figured "ok- we'll try that for a few weeks." Son wasn't ready, totally rebelled on us and it took 18 months to get him 100% comfortable again. Treats, rewards, parties, watches that played songs when it was time to go potty, nothing worked. What finally worked was when daughter was born, he realized that everyone would stop ohhing and ahhing at her and focus on him when he said "I gotta go potty"
The moral of the story is, try it, if they aren't ready or aren't interested, DON'T FORCE IT

We began teaching our son with candy bribery, 2 M&Ms every time he used the toilet. Occasionally we'd buy a little set of toys with like army guys, and he'd get one each time. We let that go on for a few weeks as he got his timing down (still wearing diapers, but he was in daycare, which made it a pain in the arse b/c they can't sit there and take them every 30 mins all day). At one point a family member, while babysitting, told him if he messed up, she'd take away a toy he'd gotten, and after that, he wouldn't go near the toilet for almost 3 months.
Once he had gotten back in the swing of it, I told him big boys don't wear diapers, and that I wanted him to be a big boy, and that was it. We told him the babies at the hospital needed those diapers, (same thing that worked for his pacifiers) and literally that was it. If that doesn't work, try a shock collar. Works on my dog.

Son was a little over two and we were very lucky. He had a great daycare teacher and she pretty much trained him herself within two weeks.
