1st, take the cat in to your veterinarian for a general work up and assessment. they can provide you with information that might make the decision easier or even find something that could alleviate symptoms and discomfort for the animals if it is not quite time.

My recommendation to everyone is the same. You know best when it is time. The vet can give you facts, numbers, and statistics but you are the best judge from the day to day perspective. Animals in general are fighters, they will keep going despite immense pain, discomfort, and confusion until they just absolutely cant. Part of your responsibility is to intervene before then and give them a peaceful end. If you're starting to have that question, its a good chance you are getting to are at that point. People feel guilty for making that decision. You shouldn't be. The only people who should feel guilty are those asking for a convenience euthanasia. This is NOT that situation.

Had to put my 18 y/o cat down a few years ago had very similar symptoms as yours, but hers was more frequent.
quote:

- walks very stiff contort last few years

She did not have this problem, but this sounds like a pain issue
quote:

- doesn't eat much only treats or wet food and then just a little
- vomiting today and tried to go outside littler box never done that

This was our biggest problem and it was her kidneys failing. We did the special kidney diet food for a few years and it basically slowed down how quickly they were failing. But as another poster stated, if a cat lives long enough, the kidneys will fail.
quote:

- random vocalization at night lately

We never had a firm diagnosis, but based on all of the evaluations when she was doing this it was either dementia or pain from her kidneys. With everything else, we did not believe it was worth the extra $$$ to confirm since her quality of life would be down regardless of the cause and we waited a few months longer than we probably should have, but decided to have her put down.

Never. Cats will go off and die and never be seen again.

We had 4 house cats over the course of 17 years. Just to keep the wife and kids happy is the only reason a cat was ever brought home. From the first week of having a cat is when I decided a cat was not for me. Sure, they can be sweet but they only want you dead if you don’t cater to them.
Now dogs are the very best pets.

Just had to put down my 16-year-old cat.

Mine started this. Best guess was night vision was failing or that she had started to fall into dementia. Dementia would make sense because the cat also started to let the kids hold her a lot and never used to do that.

Kidney failure ultimately got mine. As mentioned we tried the special food and even did things like shots to help with joint pain (a symptom of the kidneys). When they're miserable, it's time. Don't let them suffer so you don't have to make a hard decision.

Thermometer. If he has a fever, it’s time to scratch.

Is there quality of life, and would a reasonable surgery/pill/lifestyle change help it come and stay for more than a year.

Sounds like it. When they look like they're not enjoying life anymore imo.

Ask your vet to administer anesthesia (enough to render the cat unconscious) before giving the meds to stop the heart. It is truly the most peaceful death you could hope for a pet. I've had to euthanize 2 cats in the last few months. One with cancer, the other was elderly.

Lost my 18 year old kitty to that in March. We kept him pretty happy for about 6 months after diagnosis. Switched foods and had to give fluids at home twice a week which he wasn't fond of, but he fine once we got them done. Injections for the joint pain gave him a lot of relief pretty long term. There's a new injection and they used it on my kitty first at my vet's office. They said if it worked on him since his joints were pretty bad, it would be great for their other clients. Worked really well. Then, suddenly, it was time. No more purring was a sure sign, along with a few other things.

I love dogs, but cats suit my lifestyle better. Mine don't run the roost. They are well behaved kitties!

They always say your pets have a way of letting you know when its time.

I think this is your cat telling you.

Sucks, and its cruel but its about your cat and not you.

FWIW…..when I had to make this decision for my pets, in retrospect 100% of the time, I wish I had done it sooner. We tend to wait a little too long and it is purely for selfish reasons.

Why do people kill their pets before they die naturally, yet they're totally against assisted suicide for suffering humans?

Sorry to hear that.

Wasn't a cat person until one showed up in the back yard. Great cat.

You're lucky. Lot of cats flat out won't eat the prescription food for kidney health.
