How old and what breed? Do you have the time and money, especially at first if it is a puppy? If you are getting one then you must be all-in. Don't put this dog on craigslist in a month and claim you are moving to an apartment that doesn't take dogs. Worst dick move ever.

Get a leg-humper. You'll love it.

Get a cat
Cheaper. Easier to take care of. Can whip a dogs arse. Don't need attention 24/7. Better personalities.

If you live in a condo/apartment don't get a dog.
If you like to travel often don't get a dog.

You have to give more specifics.
What type of dog are you wanting?
How much free time do you have?
Do you live in a place where the dog has plenty of space to get rid of energy?
Puppy or adopting a bigger dog?

Do not get a puppy as a first dog.
Get an older rescue.
But...

Serious question: If I hadn't bathed or brushed my teeth in weeks, never wiped my arse, and licked my own balls all day would you let me hang out on your couch all day and lick you all over the face? Would you let me shite and piss all over your house for months and clean up after me while you teach me how to go outside? Would you want to pay hundreds of dollars to board me every time you wanted to leave on trip any longer than a day? Why do people think this is perfectly fine with dogs??

Do you like to travel, sometimes spontaneously?
If so, don't get a dog.
Note: I don't have a dog, because it is too much responsibility and I don't believe that the return is worth the time/investment.

In 1924, Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took Hachiko, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. During his owner's life, Hachiko greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachiko was waiting. Each day for the next nine years, nine months and fifteen days, Hachiko awaited Ueno's return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.

Yeah, that logic makes total sense. Why do people have kids when they wouldn't ever let their adult friends wear diapers and be forced to change them.

I'm not touting the rescue thing, but an older dog is the way to go to start.
If you have kids, play with them instead.
If you want kids, don't get a dog or it may harm the kids.
If you live in an apartment or condo, more expensive/can't.
Animals cost money - check out prices on shots etc.
If you like to travel, forget it.
If you work out of town, forget it.
If you can't get chicks, the dog will only get you to the first date.
TLDR; get a dog if you plan to be a single hermit forver.

You bathe a kid every day and wipe it's arse when it shits. Never seen anyone do that with a dog. It takes a shite and then goes plops its shitty arse all over your couch pillows and somehow people are totally fine with that. I'm not.

It is a 10 year commitment! If you don't have time to properly care for one, don't get one. If you research and it says HIGH ENERGY. That usually meant HIGH ENERGY! They will need loads of exercise, and not only physical. They need mental stimulus also. GSD owner myself. She could outlast the best athletes out there. I lost 20 lbs just by having to play with her.
The best advice I can give is DON'T SHOP, ADOPT. There are thousands of perfect dogs waiting to be adopted. Check out Friends of the Animals BR if you are in Louisiana.

Biggest things you have to consider is time and money. If you're someone who likes to be on the go, don't get a dog. It's not fair to them to be left alone all the time. They're social animals who need company. As far as money, the ordinary care is not bad. But when something happens and they need surgery or something, its going to cost.. They are great to have around though, I wouldn't trade my dog for anything. Oh yea, definitely adopt one from a shelter rather than buy one.

If you aren't willing to treat one like a family member don't get a dog. They may be a small part of your life, but you are everything to them.

Having a dog is good for your health and emotional well-being but only if you like animals. I love my animals and spend time training them, loving them and spending the money needed to keep them healthy. We adopt and usually have an older dog and the love and gratitude I see in them is amazing. But if you work all day and then go out every night, don't get a dog. That would be a miserable life.

Do you have kids, or will in the very near future? If so, then don't.
Do you travel a good bit? If so, then don't.
If you answered no to both, then go ahead and get one if you want something in your life to entertain you and waste money on.
