"Carry on my wayward son" was a favorite of both my boys. They've stopped asking for songs, but we sing loudly during the day being silly. My little girl will have none of that. She wants the sweet lullaby songs, and I better sing them right or else!
They're all still 8 and under, but I've definitely let time slip by me. Having a book of thoughts on each one sounds like a fantastic idea.

I started one for my granddaughter the month I found out my daughter was pregnant. I write an entry for every month. I also serves as a baby book because it lists all her milestones, and a history book because I have told her stories of her ancestors and current events.
In addition to that I have been putting together a keepsake box. It includes family mementos, stories and pictures of her ancestors, jewelry from a lot of them, a bank note from WWII given to my father from a friend when I was born along with various coins given to me by relatives, a letter sent to my mother at my birth from a missionary in India, and things like that.
I would hope that I live long enough to see her read the contents. She will have pictures and personal stories of her ancestors she never met.

My mom did this while I was growing up with several journal entries a year. She gave me the journal when I graduated high school. It’s been one of my favorite gifts that I’ve ever received. I still go back and read it often. I’m doing the same thing for my kids.

This is what I sang to my son:
I am just a poor boy
I sang this to them too. My middle, who is sappy and has a heart of gold, loves it. The boxer gave me a lot of comfort in a really bad time due to some deaths in my youth.
I told them all this morning we are going back to lullabys. They are happy.

yeah my daughter is 7 but still likes a story and a song. my wife usually does that but I fill in sometimes. I like to go in and give her a nice head massage for a minute or so before she goes to bed. the little rat loves that.

My son is 8, he probably stopped asking me to sing to him a year or two ago and until this thread I never noticed
I'm gonna make that little bastard listen to my singing tonight

My 2 year old daughter last night... “Daddy, please stop singing”
Posted on 1/27/21 at 3:32 pm to fr33manator
Sing with me, sing for a year
Sing for the laughter, and sing the tear
Sing with me, if it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Wow. Do y'all realize that we are on the OT on page 4 of a thread and nobody has come in here being a dick? I guess wonders never cease.
Yay OT.
Okay, I lied. Serial downvoter.

who are the sad, pathetic, monsters that downvote this OP?
If you dont think a parent singing lullabies to his young kids is awesome you are living life the wrong way, friend. I feel sorry for you!

The people on here who get all pissed when you post anything about kids, as they are childless and trying desperately to convince themselves they aren't missing anything.
Kids are amazing. They offer so much for so little. Of all the things you can invest in this life, kids are probably one of the better choices. Dogs a close second.

I have a 13 year old and a 16 month old. With the 13 year old, I worked the overnight shift until he was 5, so I missed a lot of time with him and regret it. With the 16 month old I give him his bath and rock him to sleep and sing/hum to him in his room every single night. Also have been blessed enough to be able to work from home since the Covid mess started last March. I know he’ll never remember it, but it’s been the most rewarding experience of my life.

What a nice thread.
I got my son down with "Silent Lucidity" a few times when he was a baby. He's 5 now. Might need to try it with my baby girl one of these nights.

My daughter will be 4 months next week. It’s cliche but you never know you could love something so much until you have a child. It’s incredible. My parents always told me that but you can’t really know until it happens.
My dad is hooked up to a ventilator now and the thing that gets me the most is the thought that he won’t be able to watch her grow up but I’m equal parts grateful that he got to meet her and rock her to sleep if even for a short while.
