There are some smart coaches out there (Leach was a lawyer), but generally speaking, you win with dumber players, and to recruit dumber players, you have to be able to get on their level. How Saban, Meyer, etc recruit so well is confusing.

Recruiting is often all about your assistants. They're the ones that do the grunt work and then the head coach seals the deal. Obviously it varies by school but the staff you put together is really important for recruiting. It's why you'll see guys who are mediocre position coaches stick around for years, they can sell the school and the team.

Before he was hired at LSU, he only had 3 years of HC experience so I am not sure if I would call that as "he was beating bama". He beat them once with a senior QB named Brett Farve.
