This is one of the few times I think a plaintiff attorney has a legit purpose.

Well yeah I'd rather they charge me to stack up costs when i take them to court.

IF the speeds in the article are correct, the bicyclist was going faster than the ambulance.
I don’t think I would read too far into who was going faster based on that. The ambulance driver estimated they were going 2-10 mph. The rider estimated he was going 5-10 mph. Both could be wrong. Or both could be right, and the bike could have still been moving slower than the ambulance. Also the ambulance may have been going 5 mph when the collision occurred but that could just be because they were turning.
That being said, I just pulled up the location of the crash in street view and I feel pretty confident that either A) he was passing the ambulance on the right or B) the ambulance straight up didn’t see him, pulling up right next to him and clipping him on the turn.
There’s no sidewalk and no “bike lane” or even marked shoulder on that road. So if they were going the same direction, somebody (either the rider or the ambulance) pulled up alongside the other.

Seems like the ambulance company missed a golden opportunity to make some real revenue. They should have called for a helicopter to airlift him.

True story : I was working a code on a patient. As I hopped in the back of the EMS unit to assist EMS during transport I cracked my skull on the door locking pin. During the ride, doing my job, I had one hand on my head, with gauze, and the other hand pumping the bag manually breathing for the patient. When I left the hospital EMS gave me a $1200 bill for the ride, and $50 for “care”, giving me a few 4x4 gauze.
When I broke my collarbone, I went to the ER. After sitting there a couple hours I got agitated and left. Never saw anyone, not even the triage or anything. They sent me a bill for $50. I called and told them they'd have to sue me for it, never heard from them again about it.

I had a case once where a client got a serious bacterial infection at the hospital and almost died. It was from a nurse that didn’t wash her hands as their own investigation showed. She infected about 16 people. He was in hospital for extra 3 weeks.
They sued my guy for the 160k not covered by his insurance, I just filed a counter claim and they ended up paying him a lot more than that. If they didn’t sue him he would have done nothing

I crashed 1.5 miles from agusta VA hospital. Ambulance refused to take me there and said " VA hospital doesn't take car accidents," despite me being a veteran w full benefits.
Called, offered to pay mileage if the supervisor dropped the fee, he dropped the entire charge and i paid nothing.
Whole thing wound up in a cluster bc the hospital i went to wouldnt bill the VA properly and kept sending me the bills instead.
SC trooper showed up and gave me a " too fast for conditions" ticket even though no one was there as witness. Cussed him for no less than 3 straight minutes.

Damn. That took some serious chutzpah.
I can't believe nobody in the legal department in either case stopped to think "This is going to really piss off the jury".

… when he and the ambulance were traveling the same direction on a street that’s a mix of homes and businesses.
…ambulance was going between 2 mph and 10 mph when they heard a thump, stopped and saw Hoesch injured. Hoesch estimated to police that he was going 5 mph to 10 mph and said he didn’t think the ambulance was going to turn in front of him.
Was the ambulance already established in the lane in front of cyclist who then tried to pass the ambulance on the right as ambulance was slowing down to turn?

When business is slow you have to be creative.

Well, it was a cyclist, after all. You know they were going to teach that driver a lesson

I don't even think I'm going out on a limb here to say the cyclist was probably at fault.
