Niece had one. It was going to cost more than what it was worth to fix(>$5K) so she dumped it.

They’re great cars. Not sure what you were expecting from here.
Not much more that I got. A bit of entertainment and got to participate in some car conversations. I’ll probably eventually buy one. Was honestly thinking about getting one and keeping for a while and then giving to my son in college when his vehicle dies. I don’t think he could handle the maintenance, so I should probably wait and do some research and get something I’d keep long term.
I enjoy reading the car talk so hopefully this thread will continue.

I stupidly bought a 20 year old one (1999 Z3) about a year ago. I know better because it’s my 3rd BMW, but so far it’s been ok. My advice would be not to do it unless you know someone who will work on it for a reasonable amount. I know a guy who will.

Been there
There is a lot of maintenance andRepairs are expensive.
If you can get one that has had good maintenance record and major repairs already done, it could be a good bet

Look for a used 335d (turbo diesel) instead of that 328i if you are gonna do this. Engine will last much longer plus way more torque (power). Much better car.

Reminds me of the time my sister in law bought a ragged out 25 year old BMW just to say she owned a BMW..... She eventually left my brother in law and last i heard was still chasing dick in Nebraska

Don't
Damn near got killed in a 328. The weight distribution is beyond shitty between front and back. Had to make a quick adjustment at about 80 mph (speed limit out West) and the rear end immediately slid out and the damn thing rolled many times over and over.
Found out about the weight issue from several people who had the same accident AFTER I bought mine.
Hate the damn things

I love luxury cars. German luxury is just better than American.
That said, I don’t see the appeal of a 10 year old bmw, Benz, etc.

BMW's, like MB's are generally class leaders when it comes to safety.
If you rolled it at 80 and walked away, I'd say that's strong as acid.

I have no idea what you are talking about and I don't think you do either.
From BMW NA for 2010 (Front/Rear) MT: Manual Transmission, AT: Automatic Transmission:
328i sedan: MT: 50.5/49.5%; AT: 51.1/48.9%
335i sedan: MT: 50.9/49.1%; AT: 51.1/48.9%
That's about as close to perfect as it gets.

We bought my son an '05 530 for a starter car. It's been pretty good. Older BMWs will leak oil. Plan on having all the gaskets replaced in one that old if it hasn't been done already.

He overcorrected at speed, back end came around and he couldn't gather it back up.
Unless he was driving a '61 Corvair, his accident was driver error.

My first car was a W124, and I’d buy another in a heartbeat. I’d also buy a BMW from that era too. They’re mechanically simple, and fun to drive.
The attention to detail on the w124 will always impress me. You don’t have to lift your hand off the steering wheel to flick the turn signal. There’s a third sunshade, right over the rear view mirror. The sight lines are excellent, in every direction.
