Opinion on buying a 10 year old BMW?

I’ve never owned a BMW, but they seem to be pretty popular in the Baton Rouge area. I’ve always liked the looks of the 328i and I’ve thought about buying a used one with about 70K miles. I’m a bit hesitant because I imagine any parts and labor are pretty expensive. Is the amount of depreciation because of the actual or fear of the potential cost of ownership? Will reliability be much different from a similar Japanese or American car? I typically drive vehicles well into the 200K miles plus range, so around 70K miles wouldn’t concern me unless BMW’s are unreliable. Thanks for any personal experience you can share.

Expensive to have worked on.

Service and general maintenance are expensive. Anything major and it’s insanely expensive.
ps - I don’t think 70k is unreasonable amount of miles. I’m guessing the price is under 10k?

There's a reason they depreciate as hard as they do.
If you get one, make sure it is meticulously maintained--which will cost a fortune at a dealer, so find a good mechanic.
If it breaks, it will also cost a fortune. And it will probably break.
If you want to buy and keep a car like you say, get a Lexus.

Are you a teenage female?

I love BMW's and I love driving.
They aren't unreliable, but they will require more care than an Asian or American product. TCO will exceed those marques by probably 25-35%.
Listen to your gut.
Hard pass.

Yeah, I saw one listed for about $7K. There are newer ones with close to 100K miles for a few thousand more.

They hold their value less than a Dodge so you should be able to get it for pennies. Just plan on keeping it forever or trading it for a push mower in a few years.

If I had to buy a 10 year-old vehicle for me to use, it would be built in Japan by Toyota/Lexus.
If I had an enemy that I could trick into buying a 10 year-old vehicle, it would be built by BMW.

Entry price is more than doable if it’s in good shape. I’d pay mechanic to check it out thoroughly as a condition of the sale.
You need to ask yourself what if the computer goes out and you have to pay 3500-5k to have it fixed. Or a/c job etc. everything like that will be in the thousands to fix.

I’ve never owned one so I can’t speak from personal experience. But two buddies of mine purchase Certified BMW’s and they both said their advice to anyone wanting to buy a used BMW is ...don’t.
The reviews on these aren’t great.
Historically not very reliable and the repairs can get expensive.

Our HOA had one of those towed.
Even though it was in the homeowner's garage.

Nah, over 50 dude. As a side note, all my cars have manual transmissions and are pretty impractical. I figure if I’m gonna buy an inexpensive practical car to scoot around town in, it might as well look sporty.

They are incredibly good cars with a lot of non-mechanical issues. Mechanically, they will last forever, it's just every sensor fails and interior parts slowly disintegrate.
If you buy the car, join the BMW CCA, (BMW Car Club of America). In this Club/Magazine you can find parts suppliers that sell OEM parts for less than you can get for Ford and Chevy and 50% less than Toyota. There is even technical support to help you solve whatever problem you may have.
I have been a member of the Club since 1989 and have owned at least 15 BMW's, including 2 race cars (still have one). I currently have a 550i 6 speed manual and a '98 M3 4/5 (and an F250 and Shelby GT350; (Subtle brag)).
Go for it. Used BMW's are a great bargain if you know what you are getting into.
I don't know if they have personal messaging on this sight, but if they do, please get in touch.
Edit: There should be some really good BMW Independent Shops in your area. They are everywhere.
