Why hike something that is clearly happening on its own?
But it's not happening in real dollars. The only thing that 3% stat shows is that, compared to 1979, AT LEAST 3% of the population is making LESS money than back then, and it's probably closer to 10% of the population making less money than minimum wage workers did in 1979.

I didn't say it was an improvement either.

Because too many people see it as some magical cure-all with no unintended consequences. I'm simply saying that as much as government welfare programs are used to buy votes now, it will be nothing compared to how UBI will be used to buy votes.

You need to leave and let the grown ups handle this. We are having a very good conversation without the kids table being involved

Any data to support that? 1975-1979 was a Shitshow

FTR the minimum wage in 1979 was $2.90 which translates to $10.15 in current dollars, so I can see your argument if you assume that wage was the right number and the current on isn't.
I don't know what the "right" number is, as that depends on the goal. And the number will differ by location.

I'm just saying that a lower percentage of people earning minimum wage than 40 years ago is not in any way proof that the market is doing a "good job" of raising wages, considering the fact that the minimum wage is lower now in real dollars than it was back then. Like I said earlier, it only proves that at least a certain percentage of people are making LESS THAN 1979 minimum wage today.

I’ve only read the OP so I’ve missed ten pages of discussion but I have a pertinent point to make to the OP.
If we go the OP’s route and say let them eat cake to the financial shite birds in this country, then I say we must legalize voluntary euthanasia to at least give the financial shite birds a peaceful exit from this place. Just letting them dumpster dive or scrape out a homeless existence is cruel.

Edited because I’m an idiot and can’t type.

I can't support the 10% claim, that is just a guess/estimation. I'm sure the data is out there.

But it has been shown in this thread that, yes, at least 3% of the population makes less than 1979 minimum wage today.

That's my point, most customers tip 15-20%. However being a server isn't considered a career path.

The governments job isn't to make sure you can make a comfortable living.

Well great, go start a UBI thread.

Well I found an estimate that said 18 million make under 10/hr (dated 2013) but that included vpbar staff and waitresses.

Oh I'm sure of that, in today's dollars

However these are jobs that require no skill or training.

Might it be the case that the relative value of the work performed on a minimum wage job in 1979 was higher than the value of the work performed on a minimum wage worker today?

It could be that the decrease in real wages makes sense and the solution is that people need to be trained to do things that give more value.

It might be antecdotal.

But it sucks when small town plants and businesses cant support the wage increases and those workers and families are stuck with having to relocate so that the fry cook at McDonalds can afford a new Xbox.

While it doesn't directly answer the question, real wage for the 10th percentile of incomes has gone up 1.2%, cumulatively, from 1979 to 2017. 50th percentile has gone up 6.1%, and 90th percentile has gone up 34.3%.
