The scale of some of these bomber raids is hard for me to understand. 279 is realtively small when compared to some in Europe, but still crazy to think about
Keep in mind that the raids in Europe were carried out primarily by B-17s. This was 279 B-29s. A single B-17 has a bomb load of 4,800 lbs. a B-29 had a bomb load of 16,000 lbs.
Another factor was a typical B-17 raid was dropping 500 lb. high explosive bombs. The Tokyo raid saw B-29s dropping incendiary bombs that weighed approximately 100 lbs each if I remember correctly.

I couldn't remember if it was Stimson or not. My brain was saying Stevenson, which I knew was wrong. I just knew it was a higher up.

While I understand that it had to be done, killing thousands of civilians shouldn't be celebrated. It's a sobering reminder of the cost of war. RIP and thanks for posting.
I celebrate it everyday. My father was on Okinawa in WWII, and had written orders in hand for a full-scale invasion of the Japanese mainland.

America went to the most extreme measures to end the war in the pacific.
We had to. The WW2 era Japanese were arguably the most evil, barbaric society in history. Some of the shite they did to POWs as well as citizens of occupied countries was horrifying.

The lesson is, don’t show up at our place on a sleepy Sunday morning and drop bombs on our shite. No thanks necessary world

What is the attitude that casts this dark shadow over America today? That sounds pretty bad

Nothing to celebrate by most people.
They started it, we finished it.
A war is won by breaking shite and killing people.
Nothing breaks the back of a nation like wiping out infrastructure and people INCLUDING civilians.
Of course soldiers were happy as hell as well they should be.
I'm an Army veteran. My dad was a WWII veteran.
I'm happy we won and proud of it.
I'm, also, a civilian ... with kids ... and grandkids.
I can't understand what drives any leader to start wars.
I pray it never happens again.
Sadly, it is happening right now and could get much worse at any moment.

Those bastards still won't apologize to this day.

The list of Japanese war crimes makes ISIS look like choir boys. They were truly evil.

But why the freak does this feel like my first time hearing of this event. Sounds like a major WW2 event, but yet I dont remember it being covered much in school.
I am 65 yo, for some reason this raid and very little of WW2 in general was ever discussed when I was in school, most of what I learned came from my own reading, and what my father told me about the war. I remember being a senior in high school, and seeing something about the extermination of Jews in Germany and thinking that this can’t be true until I researched it myself, we were taught nothing anout it.

Yeah, he understands that, idiot. That’s why he wrote, “I understand that it had to be done”. You even quoted it.

I believe it has something to do with the post war treaty we had with Japan. To not teach Americans what Japan did and the history of the war with them so that country would not be viewed negatively.
No. There were zero concessions to Japan. Their surrender was unconditional. And I (born in 1962) was taught all about the Japanese theater.
