On this day 159 years ago, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation

Following the Union victory over Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln announced his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22. In it he issued the Confederacy an ultimatum: return to the Union by January 1, 1863, or your slaves will be from thenceforth forever free. The Confederacy did not take the bait and on January 1, 1863 - 159 years ago today - Abraham Lincoln announced that every slave in those states in rebellion were freed men from that day forward. Obviously there were several problems with this. Firstly, the Union at that point had no jurisdiction over much of the Confederacy and so the proclamation had little effect in those areas. Also, the proclamation did not touch slaves in states still loyal to the Union. And finally there was the issue of legality. Could the President of the United States issue such a decree constitutionally? Lincoln's Attorney General, Edward Bates, had his doubts but Lincoln went through with it anyway.
Despite the problems, as well as its widespread unpopularity, the Emancipation Proclamation immediately freed tens of thousands of slaves then currently living in occupied territory (particularly in Louisiana and Tennessee). It also convinced European nations - such as England and France - to remain neutral in the conflict as their nations couldn't be seen defending a belligerent nation fighting to preserve the institution of slavery.
And it all went down....159 years ago today.

And it didn’t actually do anything.
He just wanted to keep Europe out of the war. And it worked.

No fricking way! I’ve been told for the past 20 years that republicans are racist and want to push the black man down.

Lincoln did a great thing by freeing the slaves
ETA: I guess the downvoters are upset that slavery ended

Muh "the parties switched"
The South switched to Republican for good more so over Christianity and abortion around 2000 than they did in 1964 over civil rights.

I rarely comment but I read all of these posts from you. I have a history minor and took both Civil War classes and the Abraham Lincoln class at UA. Keep these coming.

Meh I was saying it didn't do anything in response to people who think it did anything related to slavery on the American continent.

quote:which only freed slaves in southern states, not northern ones
issued the Emancipation Proclamation
It was a wartime measure to incite rebellion
I welcome the downvotes from those uncomfortable with factual history

Seems we need a new holiday. New Years is racist. Should be Emancipation Proclamation Day -> EP Day.

the "switch" occurred well before even civil rights... try the turn of the 20th century, with William Jennings Bryan leading the way

You forgot that it was all our fault
Who’s to fault a group of people that fought for their cause that was more than slavery being the only issue
Who’s to erase that history that shaped this country because they don’t agree with the past and refuse to embrace a future that allows them to obtain an education and better themselves
If they don’t learn from history rather than trying to rewrite it they will suffer more than their ancestors

Actually didn't mean shite. It didn't free the slaves in the North and the South was under it's own control.
