Well from what I learned about our 2 entrances, entrance hates rain, entrance 2 hates alligator bayou. Hopefully this rain goes away quick cause both could flood.

Damn is that the white (outer) line of the road on the far left of that pic?

Yes it is the white line on the roadway. What is even more interesting about that photo is the color of the water behind the Niagra Falls there--that water is cloudy.

Cloudy water often signals that land scouring is taking place. The water rushing over the roadway is fairly clean but at the bottom of the falls it is clearly muddy & turbulent.

Happy now?

Those sand bags must have been put there by these guys. They had bobcats in these trucks [/img]

The base (dirt) beneath the road is being washed out by the waterfall. This increases the rate of which the road will collapse.

Half the road is missing already. I don't think scouring is that big of a mystery

Alligator/Manchac was 12.12' @ 9p. (.36"/hr)
Bluff Swamp was 12.17'@ 9p. (.36"/hr)

Another eighth (.12") off of Bayou Fountain (15.14').

So assuming the whole .12" from Bayou Fountain went to AB then .24" came from Manchac in the past hour.

If a difference of 3ft (15' @ BF -12' @ Bluff) resulted in .12", then .24" would take a 6ft difference. That would put Manchac @ 18ft????

Totally pulling that math out of my arse but seems to make sense.

My opinion..
1. It is evident the road on alligator bayou is in trouble. See pictures
2. If the road ultimately washes out or fails it will result in a massive amount of water back feeding from manchac to the lake and swamp.
3. I honestly think the road was failing in this morning, which helped the faster decline of water level at interstate and the sand bagging operations slowed the failure. This is also what triggered the evacuation f the prison
I hope the parish has staff monitoring that road every second right now. If the failure happens the announce it so everyone in the vicinity can GTFO

This is exactly what I have been saying all day today but a small minority of people blasted me. I also saw a post by the Louisiana State Police Commission Executive Director who said the lock breached. She posted this at 6 PM.

"Cathy Derbonne shared WBRZ Channel 2's video.
4 hrs ·
Update: I received information that the lock that connects Bayou Manchac and Spanish Lake breached at Alligator Bayou. A lot of the water that would normally back up towards UC is now dumping into Spanish Lake. With Spanish Lake filling up, it will cause flooding to the women's prison in Saint Gabriel and the prisoners are now being evacuated to other prison facilities. Also, we have been told there is now water on Hwy 74. Prayers are needed for everyone's safety."

This is what is frustrating. Admittedly, I haven't been watching the news for the past couple hours but I've heard zero mention of this situation. Wouldn't even have known that sandbags were being dropped by helicopter if not for TD.com. Maybe they don't want to panic the general public but jeebus people......stop telling me about the Cajun Navy (certainly heroes & I thank you all for your service) and tell me about the upcoming threat! And will somebody please go get a freaking reading at Amite/Manchac! It's the lynch pin for all this and we've been in the dark since 3am Sunday.

End rant.

Take it for what it's worth, as WBRZ did not elaborate, but Jay Grimes just mentioned that they expect to stop the flow of water over Alligator Bayou Rd and get Manchac to drain back to the Amite. I wish there was more coverage about what's going on there. Does anyone know if they're sandbagging through the night?

All they have doing is shrugging and saying "it is due to crest soon". Have been hearing this for two days now.

I'm pretty sure they stopped dropping via helicopter last night at dark so would imagine they're doing the same tonight.

This has been my main worry. That it happens in the middle of the night & nobody knows. Will the gauges reflect it?

They would need a ton of bags at this point. The stretch of road being overtopped is very long, and I would think it's going to take a few days.
