Well, that is just terrible.
i've a booked named, "moments" showcasing pulitzer prize winning photos right along the lines of this very thread. it's disturbing, but the write ups (and obviously the photos) are great material. i highly recommend anyone interested in this thread pick it up.

Samantha Koenig assists Israel Keyes right before the serial killer climbed through the window of her coffee stand and killed her.

Pictures of the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City.

This shows the 2nd and 4th floor walkway collapses.

Here's what it was supposed to look like.

It collapsed during a "Tea Dance" hosted at the hotel...

quote:

Approximately 1,600 people gathered in the atrium for a tea dance on the evening of July 17, 1981.[7] The second-level walkway held approximately 40 people at approximately 7:05 p.m., with more on the third and an additional 16 to 20 on the fourth.[1]:54 The fourth-floor bridge was suspended directly over the second-floor bridge, with the third-floor walkway offset several yards from the others. Guests heard popping noises moments before the fourth-floor walkway dropped several inches, paused, then fell completely onto the second-floor walkway. Both walkways then fell to the lobby floor

114 were killed.

May 11th 1985:

An image of a fire in the stands at Bradford City Stadium, UK captured on camera/film. The flames erupted quickly, eventually engulfing the entire grandstand killing 56 and injuring more than 260.

It is believed the cause of the fire was that a spectator dropped a lit cigarette in between the bleachers into a void filled with paper trash.

[quote]Keyes' last known victim was 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, a coffee booth employee in Anchorage, Alaska. Keyes kidnapped her from her workplace on February 1, 2012, took her debit card and other property, sexually assaulted her, then killed her the following day. He left her body in a shed and went to New Orleans where he departed on a pre-booked two-week cruise with his family in the Gulf of Mexico. When he returned to Alaska, he removed her body from the shed, applied makeup to the corpse's face, sewed her eyes open with fishing line and snapped a picture of a four-day-old issue of the Anchorage Daily News alongside her body, posed to appear that she was still alive. After demanding $30,000 in ransom, Keyes dismembered Koenig's body and disposed of it in Matanuska Lake, north of Anchorage.[citation needed]

By FAR the two most haunting images I've seen were videos:

(1) the Russian soldier having his live head sawed off by Chechen islamist militants, that one's still floating around the internet for those who care to look

and worse,

(2) an ultrasound image recording of a baby being aborted... that one leaves me believing that Eric Rudolph has the right idea and these "doctors" deserve to die

I was actually thinking of adding this one while reading through the thread. The frightening thing about the Valley Parade fire was how quickly it spread.

The game was going along fine, and then a little over 2 minutes later, the stand became an inferno. Fans sitting toward the back of the stand were burned alive when they tried escaping through the turnstile gates behind them and found them locked.

Video of the broadcast as it happened

While this isn’t him, it’s a picture taken in the same spot just a few minutes before Tate Graves is dragged in and killed by a gator at the Grand Floridian Resort in Disney World. I could definitely be seeing things, but when I zoom in to the kid’s right, about halfway into the grass, I think I see a gator staring at him.

Another picture of the same kid, I believe. Again, probably a clump of grass, but bottom corner left close to the shore seems like it could possibly be a gator as well.

In 1999 I took this picture of the fatal accident of Gonzalo Rodríguez at Laguna Seca. It was Saturday morning practice (the wiki says qualy but it's wrong) and I was the only photographer at the apex at the top of the corkscrew. There were some photographers on the other side of the track where the car landed. This picture was published in magazines around the world, including Racer and Autosport, but it was mostly printed as a small picture. The Italian magazine Autosprint was the only one to print it big, as you can see. Because the car flipped over the wall instead of coming to a dead stop at the wall, I thought the forces were dissipated and it wasn't a big deal. It was only when they flipped the car upright and had a tarp over it to prevent people from seeing the cockpit did I realize that things weren't fine.

It wasn't until about 15 years later that I found out that Dr. Steve Olvey (the CART medical director at the time) had written a book describing some of the worst racing accidents he had attended to, so I read the book and he described this accident in more detail. As you would expect, Gonzalo died of a basilar skull fracture, but the details are gruesome. I just did a search and found the excerpt from the book here:

https://motorsport-in-the-world.blogspot.com/2007/10/the-death-of-gonzalo-rodriguez.html

After you read the last two paragraphs and look at the photo again, it becomes more morbid.

Also, I just found out that a couple of years ago, they made a documentary based on Dr. Olvey's book, Rapid Response, and it's available on Amazon Prime.

Chris McCandless hitchhiked to Alaska in 1992 and ventured into the bush along the Stampede Trail a little north of Denali National Park. He found shelter in an abandoned bus and eventually died of starvation. Because other hikers wanted to find the notorious bus (with some dying in the attempt) it was deemed a safety hazard and was moved to the Museum of the North in Fairbanks.
