You don't think that in the future, when Americans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan are 75+ years old, will have the same things said about them??
As a veteran of Iraq, I will happily correct anyone that ever compares my experiences with Iwo Jima or the like.

True American heros. In a few short years, they will be greatly missed.

Edward Teach posts on this board on a rare occasion. He was at Iwo Jima.

The WWII vets are dieing off and in a few years there will be none left.
Its been estimated that over 16 million Americans served in some capacity in the war effort.
Today, its estimated that less than a million of those vets are alive today.
WWII is becoming a faded memory and its history and lessons will sadly be forgotten.
A friend of mine had an uncle who was a Marine vet who was in the Battle of Iwo Jima. For several years I thought he was just a crazy ole guy.
One day while sitting at his table, I noticed a coin which looked like a silver dollar.
I picked it up to look at it & he said, 'Yeah, thats what they sent me the other day, to commemorate when we went in to Iwo Jima.'
My buddy & I just sit there looking at the coin and was somewhat stunned. I had no idea that he was a Marine and was in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
My respect for that man went up a million times after that. He still acted a little nutty but he was a still a giant in my eyes.

about 10 years ago a friend's grandpa had his driver's license taken away, he went into the office and basically told them, I fought at Tarawa and you aren't taking my license.
they gave him his license back

My grandfather's crew still has their Iwo Jima reunions as well. It was an honor to meet those guys after he died. He was a platoon sergeant that lost a leg to a mortar shell and was carried off the field by one of his men and shot three times during the rescue. He came home to live a great life and I really miss having him around.
