You think he was paying taxes on his ill-gotten gains?
Good point haha. Pretty sure embezzlement is a matter for the FBI though.

Not only that, but is hard for me to imagine any sort of scandal in BR which would shake me to my core as hinted at in the post.
Just like the insider trading at Shaw, there may be more involved but only one will go down with the ship.

Local authorities investigate to see if a state law was broken.
They can ask the Feds for help, but that's it. If they see that state law was broken they'll let the DA know.
Now if local authorities see that federal laws were broken then they can make the federal attorney aware of it.
I'm thinking ultimately this gets kicked up to the Feds. Even if true about the 500K ( I've heard it was considerably more) It's not as though he was dipping into a pot of cash and pulling out rumpled 20's

The amount embezzled doesn't make it a federal crime.
He could be prosecuted for tax evasion, but if found guilty of stealing then that's a moot point.
If he used the mail to facilitate illegal activities then he could be prosecuted for mail fraud.

What I am hearing is all rumors at this point and I will not post it on here. Pray I am wrong.
I'm really hoping it's not true either.
Just go ahead and tell us what you've heard, true or not true. Remember, this is BR, tons of people heard what you've heard already anyway. Don't tell us the source, just tell us what you heard. Let us be the judge of whether we believe it or not.

I have to wonder what their plan is to staff said hospital because they can't even staff what they have.
I've wondered that too. They're struggling with everything from administrators to nurses as far as I know.

I was thinking along those lines and possibly bank fraud as well.....the IRS part would be a cherry on top. There may be more than just Funes skimming

I still don’t understand any business that doesn’t have better checks and balances. You read all the time about some small business bookkeeper who embezzles millions. But this wasn’t a small operation. It’s been reported that the amount is between $300,000-$500,000. Not quite the 8 figures reported on here by someone with good sources yesterday.
Could be like the Southern Band Director who had people write checks directly to him.

BATON ROUGE - Hospital leaders at Our Lady of the Lake confirmed to the WBRZ Investigative Unit Wednesday that John Paul Funes confessed when allegations were presented before him about falsified records and missing money.

I guess all those saying wait and see can now clam up seeing as he appears to have confessed.

Yeah, where is the dickbag that was knighting for him last night and waxing philosophical about society descending into anarchy cause we were criticizing him?
JPF had a $285K annual salary and it wasn’t enough. Most people will never touch that income and go about their lives without being a thief. frick him. He gets everything that’s coming to him.

I’m guessing it was gambling. Anyone who knows JP knows that he loves to play the ponies.

He’s not going to do jail time. Guys with his money and his connections don’t go to jail for white collar crime like this. Probation and restitution.

It was kind of awkward seeing him last night at st aloysius confirmation last night

I am glad OLOL made this very public. Many times it is swept under the rug and the person just pays restitution and it never sees the light of day.
Handling it this way ensures the next person will have more second thoughts than Nunes had.

Even if they aren't set up like that, I am still confused as to how one person has this much unilateral control over an organization's funds...especially one that has so much income.
It’s the Lake. One person in an unrelated department can and will screw up plans in other departments including staffing, payroll etc. It boggles the mind how much power individuals have in OLOL, FMOL, HLN, etc.

Kind of? I bet the hell it was.

Confessed to what though? Is this a situation where money was actually stolen, or was this an exhorbitant expense account situation.
Stealing money and putting it in your bank account is different than chartering a private jet without permission.
An article today referenced money that “was not spent for authorized foundation purchases.”
That’s different language than embezzlement.

May lose his house among the other assets seized, but no telling. He’s well connected and well liked. Going to depend on what they find when they start backtracking and how heavily feds get involved.
