Apparently some white guy named "Coon" (I'm not making this up & don't ban me ) who's the head of the Ole Miss NAACP & a student senator started this campaign with the help of Daily Mississippian (student newspaper ). The faculty were on board from the get go. The blowback is brewing from the number of out of state students on this board. They didn't allow the entire student body a voice.

Yeah, slavery. Real proud legacy to stand for

Nobody here cares what the Mississippi flag is, and Mississippi didn't even have an official state flag from 1906 to 2001. The flag that people would like to change has been the official state flag for 15 years. If you're so bored that you have to melt over this, you're the most boring type of person imaginable.

Looks like Coon is president of the College Democrats, not naacp.

It's really a magical place.

Mississippi's stated reasons for seceding:
quote:
Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth… These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.
Texas
quote:
The servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations.
South Carolina
quote:
Those [Union] States have assumed the right of deciding upon the propriety of our domestic institutions; and have denied the rights of property established in fifteen of the States and recognized by the Constitution; they have denounced as sinful the institution of slavery; they have permitted open establishment among them of societies, whose avowed object is to disturb the peace and to eloign the property of the citizens of other States.
Georgia
quote:
That reason was [the North's] fixed purpose to limit, restrain, and finally abolish slavery in the States where it exists. The South with great unanimity declared her purpose to resist the principle of prohibition to the last extremity.
And Georgia and Texas (respectably in the quotes) stated their want to expand it:
quote:
We had acquired a large territory by successful war with Mexico; Congress had to govern it; how, in relation to slavery, was the question then demanding solution. Northern anti-slavery men of all parties asserted the right to exclude slavery from the territory by Congressional legislation and demanded the prompt and efficient exercise of this power to that end. This insulting and unconstitutional demand was met with great moderation and firmness by the South. We had shed our blood and paid our money for its acquisition; we demanded a division of it… or an equal participation in the whole of it. The price of the acquisition was the blood and treasure of both sections-- of all, and, therefore, it belonged to all upon the principles of equity and justice.
quote:
The controlling majority of the Federal Government, under various pretenses and disguises, has so administered the same as to exclude the citizens of the Southern States, unless under odious and unconstitutional restrictions, from all the immense territory owned in common by all the States on the Pacific Ocean, for the avowed purpose of acquiring sufficient power in the common government to use it as a means of destroying the institutions of Texas and her sister slaveholding States.
quote:
Also, there were slaves in the North as well, so I don't see how slavery is a southern legacy.
Then you are delusional if you can't see it. America has a history spanning 240 years. The Confederacy was only 4 and fighting mostly for slavery. One only spent a 1/3 of it's lifespan making parts of it slavery legal, while the other spent all of it's time making all of it's territories slave friendly and wanted to expand it. I think it's very fair criticism.

Truly one of the dumbest things I've seen posted on TD (wow). I'm sure it will get 50 upvotes.
As far as the question, how is it an American legacy? While slavery has existed for 1000's of years, no other country based it on race or used such violent means to sustain it. But you should've learned that in junior high school

So you really don't think that 90% of the world doesn't think this way? The Confederacy was a state founded in direct response to slavery. America was founded in direct response to all people having a say in how they were represented by the government instead of having kings and lords. It was the first democracy done on such a grand scale (so spare me anyplace that would take less than a week on horseback to cross). I agree it was founded with hypocrisy, due to slavery and women not being able to vote, but hey it was a start, and the world largely followed suite after that.

Don't correct him. See how long it takes him to figure out how stupid his statement was.

I read where the OM SJW Coon said he planed on removing every symbol of the Confederacy from the Ole Miss campus. This is the reason you cannot give an inch with his kind. There is no middle ground.

I agree that's fricking bullshite. I mean, there's a Confederate graveyard on campus, and I don't think we need to frick up their bodies or anything. They were our students at one point after all.
EDIT: But the hypocrisy behind that nickname is absolutely stunning.

I haven't surveyed 90% of the world, but I'm glad you have and are willing to put there opinions online. The confederacy was founded because of disagreement between states and federal government, and those disagreements include slavery but also many others (taxes). America split away from Britain soon after Somerset v. Stewart, so does that mean the US was founded in direct response to slavery (most of the founding fathers had slaves, right)? and not because it wanted to be the democracy that the "world largely followed suite" of...after multiple bombing raids?

It's a shame that this loud, unemployed minority can make this happen. Meanwhile, the rest of us are too busy WORKING and supplying for this nation instead of focusing our time and effort, day in and day out, on stupid bullshite like this. I'm so sorry you're offended...
Get the frick over it and go get a job and contribute to society like the rest of us....
