Good for them. Minds are being changed. Times are changing and the human race is slowly getting it. I'm encouraged by this.

My god...this is just so staggeringly ignorant.

Chattel slavery in the US was one of the most humane in the world. (As far as something like slavery goes)

If you think slavery in the States was so brutal, you better not do any reading on actual slavery pretty much anywhere else.

Read my posts earlier in the thread. It's straight from the horse's mouth where those are primary reasons for seceding.

But I'll ponder your hypothetical. So what if a German came up to you and said, "well those disagreements with the rest of the world did include wiping out the Jews, but also many others, like our territories being stripped from us." You'd look at him like he was insane. You are defending why the South fought for slavery when they were pretty clearly already on their way out the door by the end of the century.

I'm all set without the nove, and I know why the war was fought, but making the southern US the icon of slavery throughout history is just incorrect.

Coon apparently used a black female writer (Sierra Mannie ?)from the the DM to attack conservative student senators. She started a social media attack on pro flag senators and basically stopped any major public dissent thru character assassination.

I didn't say the South was, I said the Confederacy was. There's a difference. You can think of the South very easily without slavery. You can't tell me with a straight face that the first thought that comes to your head when it comes to the Confederacy isn't slavery.

It really isn't. I think of the slave practices that went on in the Caribbean and South America that made American chattel slavery look like a damn tea party by comparison.

Look kid, you can't just pick and choose the parts of a culture you like to keep, and throw out the parts you don't like. Thinking like that is incredibly destructive.

Actually, I think of sweet-arse uniforms, Josey Wales and a damn cool flag. I think the Union Jack is the only cooler flag.

Well do you ever see your neighbor mowing the lawn and think to yourself "Working on Sunday? I really should kill him." If you're a Christian (unless you're truly fricking nuts), you pick and choose too.

I acknowledge what happened in history, but I don't choose to use my culture's frick-ups as a badge of honor. I'll address them if they're brought up, and then move on. I choose to focus on the positives, and the Confederacy and slavery was not one of them. The music and food it brought out though, that will stand the test of time in a way the Confederacy never had a chance to do.

If slavery was on the way out the door by the end of the century (which I agree with), why would such a bloody war be fought? Are you saying the the Feds would send hundreds of thousands of young men to sacrifice themselves for something that was on the way out the door?

And f*** your hypothetical

Sure you can. Cultures do it all the time. Tell that to modern day Germany with regards to the Nazi's during WW2. Political extremists from conservative religious Republicans to politically correct liberal Democrats spend their very political lives doing just that.

People who compare the Confederacy to Nazi Germany show they care more about identity politics than history, and frankly bore me.

The articles of secession were 19th century political fundraisers. Share croppers don't finance new nation building and war's. People use these as "proof positive " the South left to preserve slavery and that's not being intellectually honest. The US Constitution protected the institution & in 1860 it was mathematically impossible to amend. If the South doesn't secede, slavery dies a much slower death, but a less costly one.

Were the Nazis more evil? Of course. They also partook in slave labor and exterminated them through incredibly brutal means. But that doesn't change that the Confederacy was formed in direct response to slavery, and slavery is evil. Maybe not genocidal evil, but evil nonetheless. Please tell me how I'm wrong in this?

I'm not really comparing it. Just make it the point that countries whitewash their cultures as they see fit all throughout history. It's what idealogues do on both sides of the political spectrum.
