Regardless of what "tradishunz!" And "history" the state flag once represented, the confederate battle flag now means something else. It signifies division based on race. It has been hijacked by groups and movements that champion this division.
What's wrong with the students of a University deciding they would rather have a symbol representing thier university's state that unites, rather than divides? If the symbol represents something you are trying to move past, move past the symbol too.
I personally would be fine with getting rid of "Ole Miss" or "Rebels" if they had racially divisive overtones, but they don't. And they never will.

Exactly. These posters here are trying to justify what they did, but it's unjustifiable. It's human trafficking. Even if you convince me there were bigger reasons than slavery for starting the Civil War, slavery is still a major portion in this. Yes we reaped some long term benefits from slavery, but that doesn't make what our ancestors did all the understandable from the modern mindset.

Well, the fact that it's the flag for the state that provides the institution funding, for starters. That, and I disagree with your assertion that the flag is inherently divisive.

Why does anyone in this country keep arguing slavery was wrong? Who says it wasn't? Why should white people (many of whom never owned slaves) feel ashamed? Times were different and it was acceptable...now it isn't...unless you are in Africa where the real atrocities are happening. I will never understand how some blacks argue about what our nation did to them meanwhile it's still going on in their homeland.

It is not a requirement to fly the state flag to recieve funding. If an institution disagrees with a symbol, or similar, of the state, then the state should cut them off? I hope you don't take a stance like this towards government involvement.
And you disagree with my assertion? You don't have many black friends, do you? If you do, tell that to one of them. Its not my assertion that its divisive.

It may very well be both. But the fact remains that the University's students felt the symbol was divisive and offensive to a segment (or maybe totality) of the student population, and decided to take a stand against. The movement of progress in the South away from race-hate has always been a bumpy one.

Because they knew it was wrong on at least some level. Seriously, how would they like to be abducted from their homes and sold to the highest bidder, where they can often be beaten within an inch of their life? If they knew the Golden Rule, then they subconsciously knew that slavery was wrong, even if they were benefitting from it.

it just won't be representative of Mississippi anymore. The south is known for its amazing food, warm and welcoming people and rich culture which will still remain despite the removal of this flag. By the way I was born and raised in the south, had ancestors fight for the north and south, and I think any American can have a say in our nations history.
