Check out the pnw. There are a lot of areas with mild summers and comparable winter temps with the south.

This will be entirely dependent on where you go, what you enjoy doing, and how much family & current friends mean to you.

I moved away, didn't at all mind the cold/snow (I enjoy skiing more than southern outdoor activities), & easily made new friends. Being away from family was undoubtedly the hardest part.

I second this.

Getting A/C in the South made a world of difference.

Got roughly 20 million acres of wilderness to play on.

The SO was born on Kodiak, she's been wanting to take me to see where she's from for about 3 years now.

Worried I'll love it too much. I love that scenery and privacy.

We looked seriously at the PNW. Their politics made us decide no.

Let's define "north". To go north of Louisiana, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, even northern Alabama and northern Georgia, will give you some winterish weather, but it doesn't stay frozen for long. Summers can be hot and sometimes humid, but you don't feel that you need to breathe freezer air for a break.

The attitudes of the people in this country do vary regionally. And that can be important depending on the way you look at life.

We've met folks everywhere who would fit in here, but we've also met some who would be labeled 'damn Yankees' quickly.

Reading a local newspaper on line is one way to get to know an area. Join a local forum. Take a do nothing vacation and see if the feel of the place makes you smile. Then take another do nothing vacation six months later.

Idaho, Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon are conservative.

I have a House next door to my daughter in St Paul, MN. I visit there this time of the year and come back down South in the late fall.

Exactly I live 30 mins outside of Portland and still pretty conservative we’re I live, besides know one has confronted me about my political beliefs since I have been here. Sorry you are missing out on an opportunity due to political affiliations.

The part of the state in which I live is left leaning but It doesn't affect my day to day life.

Summer in Chicago and Minneapolis is awesome, but winter is too long and too cold.

Consider Chattanooga, Asheville, Knoxville area for a happy medium.

Have you been there during the winter? It’s like living in north Louisiana but with -20 degree temps and a LOT of snow.

It's a lot easier to avoid the crazy leftists in the pnw than a lot of people think. If it really bugs you just stay out of Seattle, Olympia, and Portland. There's a few smaller college towns but huge swaths of the pnw is conservative.

I'd love to spend winters in the Snow Capital of the lower 48, & summer Gulf front.

The scenery in Pittsburgh is nice. Trees, big hills, deer, bridges.

Just got here so I can’t talk about winter, but summer is awesome.

80-85, cool in the shade, cool breeze, high 60’s at night.

I left BTR to live in Chicago. The winters are colder than BTR, but not bad. For what Chicago's quieter burbs have to offer, that is a small price to pay. Yes, it may be impossible to go swimming outdoors between September and May, and there are occasional days when the snow and slush make travel difficult.

The thing about winter is that you can almost always dress right for it. More layers, and bundle up, and you are cozy. In fact, I have lived in warmer climates close to 3 decades, and the Chicago stint has been about 1/6th of my life, but I seem to enjoy it. The change in weather, in itself is a pleasant experience in my opinion.

I wanted something way up North and something in the south. Well, things fell apart for me health wise. To cold kicks my arse and to hot kicks my arse. But it is way easy to just lower the AC in the summer months.

If I want a taste of cold winter, I would just fly up there for a week or two.
