Why not move to the west coast? Anything within 10-15 miles of the Pacific will be really nice year round

The thing about winter is that you can almost always dress right for it. More layers, and bundle up, and you are cozy. In fact, I have lived in warmer climates close to 3 decades, and the Chicago stint has been about 1/6th of my life, but I seem to enjoy it. The change in weather, in itself a pleasant experience in my opinion.

Yep, I really don't get cold, just dress for it. The only thing you can't escape from is wind but we have some wind sheltered areas. People are far more into the outdoors here than they are in the South. That's the main reason they move here

We were looking there, and happened to be there when there was a vicious assault on a child. A convicted child multilater had been let out of prison. He quickly found another little boy and cut the boy's penis off. Somehow the child survived and was found, walking along a dirt road, bleeding. Police recognized the style ofthe assault and arrested the perp.

Talk radio was disgusting. Most faulted society and then the child's mother came on and she said that the next time the perp was let out of prison, it would be more important to keep him monitered more closely.

-That was when we decided we couldn't fit in.

True. I’ve walked outside for about 2 minutes after showering and had ice in my beard. You can dress for it but your face can get the brunt of it.

For me it wasn’t the cold as much as that it seemed like it got dark at 4pm in the winter. Did not like.

Why not have a house in both?

On live PD last night they had a case of someone returning to their Florida second home to find someone had moved in and changed the locks. The police couldn't just kick them out, the owners would have to go to court to evict them. This would take weeks at minimum, probably more like months.

And fight fires 5 months out the year.

But really, I found the air way to dry and was hard to breath for me many years ago.

This could easily be prevented if people actually spoke to their neighbors. My next door neighbors, originally from Wisconsin, would live in South MS from Oct-May. They didn’t do summers or hurricane season down here. But everyone in the neighborhood knew when they were gone, they had someone cut the grass all summer, and we all looked after their place. I would love to do that in retirement.

I’m from south Louisiana but have been up in North Dakota for over a year. The spring/summer/fall seasons are all nice but I find the winters up here depressing. 6+ months of winter temps and 3-4 months with possible negative temps and 30-50mph winds. Frostbite warnings on exposed skin in 5-10 minutes. Not much you can do outside when it is like that.

People tend to really take advantage of spring/summer up here and stay inside mostly for winters.

Have another year left and it has been a good experience overall. People are really nice and there is no crime. Miss the food down south and the hunting/fishing. Hunting up here is mostly lottery only for big game and hard to get picked.

I always thought there were more people out and about in the winters here, than I have seen in SELA. But I wrote it off as a figment of my imagination or because I was in a different phase in my life when in was in BTR and probably was not out much myself to see others. But, I think you have a point here.

Yes, but tell me, doesn't it feel great with the winter beard. Agreed, my beard develops icicles sometimes, but hey, my cheeks feel warm underneath all of that :).

The only thing I hate about winters is people complaining, and worse, people forgetting the physics of motion and driving like they hate living.

Well, I definitely qualify as "olds" at 47 and haven't made that move yet, but I am in the process at this very moment. Moving to central Vermont in October. Raised in the New Orleans burbs, currently living in Charleston, SC. and cant wait to start tje new life in New England. Should turn a nice profit on my home here and turn that around and at,least half pay for a cabin on 10+ acres. Start me a little homestead and live happily ever after. I dont really care for my family much because they are basically as bayou trash as you can get and I have some friends already established there that are more family than any blood I have in La. I hate the heat and love snow, so I do not forsee any problems there...we will see.

Living on the edge of a time-zone is a bitch, and yes, can we get rid of day-light savings please? It only magnifies the contrast.

Best place to move for perfect weather is San Diego. Hardly ever too cold or too hot. I lived there for a year and loved it.

I have a much more difficult time with the white nights of summer than early darkness of winter

Lots of people up here go to “Flarahdah” for the winter. I haven’t figured out exactly where that is, but it sounds nice.

When New York is hot, it’s surprisingly hot. When it’s cold, it’s very cold.

The biggest difference is the periods between, which exist and are more enjoyable.

I have lived in Lafayette and in Detroit, and I would trade our summers for northern winters.

Yeah, wherever there is enough hair, it’s alright. I’ve had my eyes watering from the cold walking 30ft to my office. It’s all bearable depending what you’re wearing.

It’s not as bad as people down south saying every year is the hottest/longest.
Driving in snow/ice is tricky depending on your car. I’ve driven a rear wheel truck since I’ve been here without a wreck or going off the road(knock on wood). First storm of the year, ALL roads have a wreck somewhere.
