Olds who left heat of the south to live in the cold winter of the north? Was it worth it?

The mild five months of summer with highs in the 80s and seven months of winter? What about leaving your family down south? visiting family? so much distance to grandkids?
This is for people that have done it and can offer insight to the quality of life up north versus what we enjoy down south. I like the hot summers down south I can jump in a lake or pool if I need to, but I’m only 50% of the equation.
Tell me about your experiences baws.

Why not have a house in both?

In retirement I could do that, but I am many years away from that

Have you considered air conditioning?

I was not old at the time, but did live in Colorado for a while. Unfortuately, it turned out to be hotter in the summer than it was back in Louisiana. I did enjoy the dry air in both winter and summer. The quality of life there was good, but that came with a substantially higher cost of living.
I did find myself missing my family and the southern culture in general a lot, so I ultimately moved back. The whole thing was a good experience and did bring me to the realization that I don't want to live outside of the south.

Yeah I’m not talking about Colorado I’m talking about up north, where August is 80-85 tops

I’ve been up north and to both the east and west coast. I have zero desire to live there. When it’s cold up there, it’s bitterly cold. There’s also snow and ice to deal with daily. I would, however; consider living along the gulf coast in Florida.

It's awesome. Three months of summer (temps max 60s and 70s,) two months of fall, two of spring and five of winter. Don't miss a thing about the South.

Not really. More like 5 when it’s below 40.

Sucks. Driving isn’t an option unless you have over a week to be gone.
I’m going to move back at some point. It’s not unbearable here but, the cold sucks. Especially when you have two weeks of -15 or worse.
It’s pretty much the polar opposite of the south. People are outside constantly during April-September/October and are “mostly” indoors the rest.

So you think the five of super hard winter are worth the mild climate the rest of the year? How many years have you been up there doing it?
And tell me this I would take a serious hit to income to do it, is the quality of life worth it to you in your opinion don’t worry about what others think?

Now Minnesota has extremely cold winters, but you would prefer to move south if you had a choice? What are you doing up there now? Was it something that you didn’t have a say in?

Easily. Temps are in the 20s and thirties, I would like it if it were a bit colder
There is a helluva lot to do in winter, it's not miserable at all. I've lived here for roughly Twenty years

No question. I've got mountains and the coast. I'm happy every day to be here. The opinion of others is not important to me at all.

I have lived in Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago and Fond du lac, WI. It's not that the winters are so cold, it's just that they are so long. When it's snowing in April that really sucks.

I would prefer the south with the same job. I took a fantastic job in my field that will pay dividends in the future. My choice to come up here. Don’t regret it one bit other than the culture is completely different. College football fanatics are not existent.

Going to Oregon at the end of the year, hope it's not too damn cold.

Sure. I'm not very materialistic and happiness and spiritual contentment is far more important to me I make enough to support myself, don't care about keeping up with the Jones, and feel like I'm on vacation every day of my life. I live modestly, work as little as possible and really enjoy the outdoors.
