I’ve got a 12 year old Heeler mix that has always loved being outside, preferred being outside during the day then coming in at night to sleep. This past week or so, he sits at the back door and barks and seems super reluctant to go outside, to the point of him not listening to me, which is very very strange. He’s the type of dog that does everything on command.

He’s healthy, I’ve looked for pests he might of gotten into. No bee hives, ant beds, anything like that. He’s got a 12x12 gazebo with an elevated bed in a fenced in 2 acre back yard.

What says the OT? Anyone else experienced this?

Has anyone else had this issue?

Some other animal put a whoopin on him when he was outside recently?

Maybe he's smart enough to know it's too damn hot to go outside...

Not that exact issue but my elderly dog has been sundowning for about two years now. She has had weird personality and behavior changes every now and then much like you’re describing.

No, no battle scars or anything. Everything is fenced in. I’m thinking maybe he had a run in with a raccoon or something and it scared the shite out of him?

Full disclosure, he isn’t the fighting type.

Appreciate the well thought out response. This is occurring early in the morning when it’s time for him to go out and do his business. OMG, a dog outside in the summer!

I have a Boston Terrier about the same age that has obviously had personality/mental changes due to advanced age. Can't make up her mind whether she wants to be inside or out. Will bark at the door to go out and then look at me like I'm insane for opening the door and trot back to her bed for a nap instead, etc.

So why make it out to be like he’s outside all day?

I mean, there’s a pretty big difference between a 5 year old dog outside all day and a 12 year old dog outside all day.

Unless you have recent bloodwork and got him checked out by a vet, this may just be an assumption on your part.

Just because you don’t see any visible issues doesn’t mean there aren’t any.

At that age anything can happen to make them go downhill quick.

Yeah, I had one that was similar. I would take him for a walk to the neighborhood. There one house with an aggressive pitbull. He never had contact with the other dog but It got to where he didn’t want to walk down the street near that home.

Afraid of fireworks? It's that time of year when idiots entertain themselves by burning their money while terrorizing animals and veterans that suffer with PTSD.

Is there a chance he hears (or heard) some coyotes in the distance? Dogs are generally scared shitless of them and they may be coming a lot closer to your house at night than you think.

I had an outside dog acting strangely one time. Eventually I figured it out and killed a coyote that was coming near at night. When I let my boy out of his pen, he immediately ran over and pissed on the dead coyote!

That’s a very real possibility. We’ve only been here two months, and it’s wilderness behind the house/fence. I’ll put a game camera at the gazebo facing the woods and see what I pick up.

I have an 11 year old Chiweenie that was the same, loved walking around the block etc etc.

He stopped being interested and we found out he has arthritis in his hips.

The vet has some dog pain rx they can give you.
