If I am understanding this, Capt. Shreve cut through a bend in the Mississippi River and where the Mississippi used to flow became Old River... Wiki on Old River

quote:

In the heyday of steamboats along the Mississippi River, such a vessel would need several hours to travel the 20 miles (32 km) of Turnbull's Bend, after which it would have progressed only about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the entrance to the bend. To reduce travel time, Captain Henry M. Shreve, a river engineer and namesake of Shreveport, Louisiana, dug a canal in 1831 through the neck of Turnbull's Bend; this canal became known as Shreve's Cut. At the next high water, the Mississippi roared through this channel.[9] The upper portion of Turnbull's Bend was referred to as Upper Old River, while the larger, lower portion became known as the Lower Old River.

But was he a river boat pilot? That is the question.

There's like 10 bodies of water people call "Old River" in Louisiana.

The more important question is whether he ever painted his face a different color.

It’s probably more accurate to say, Shreve just sped up a natural process. General Grant’s forces did similar things around Vicksburg.

They tried and failed miserably. The river shifted on its own.

They likely sped up the process, though, even if it didn’t really accomplish his immediate goals.

Dude, the entire Mississippi River south of the Old River control structure is man made if you want to get technical. It would not exist if man had not intervened.

So if a supervillain wanted to do super villain wanted to cause problems, they would just blow up the area between the miss river and old river?

Triva:

One of the experts that they called in to help study the problem was one of the world’s leading authorities on river sediment transport: UC-Berkeley hydraulic engineer Dr. Hans Albert Einstein, son of the famous Albert Einstein.

Clearing the log jam on the Atchafalaya was really what accelerated the process.

The future will bring hard decisions with regard to the Mississippi. If we are going to try and maintain the ORCS in perpetuity (impossible, IMHO), then they need to abandon the mouth of the Mississippi, and Plaquemines Parish, and let it fill the vast disappearing wetland south of New Orleans.
