I was wrong apparently RTG's warehouse has the highest tax rate in the state.

I've noticed this a lot but buying furniture today I called out a manager.
Bought a bed for $1077. I put it on our store credit but had to pay tax.
Well tax was $115.67 which is odd because 10% would be $107.70 and Jefferson parish charges 9.75.
So they are marking up the taxes a few percent to make extra. Shady. Taco Bell also charges 11% tax.

That's illegal. I'd tell him you're calling the authorities unless he cuts 20% off the bill.

Was there a delivery fee or assembly fee added which could've accounted for the extra tax?

No. I'm picking it up, no delivery.
It's odd. Manager said no one ever said anything beefier.
Just looked at old invoice. Same charge.

The guy even bragged three company sells $2.5B a year. Well that's a few million bucks extra if every store charges an extra 1.75% in tax.

I think it's shady.

Is it inside or outside the city limits? Because that can make a difference

The wife made me go sit down, lol. She didn't care about $5. I collect sales tax for five parishes I know my percentage.
The final excuse was they are hq in La in Slidell and tax there is what they charge.

I know for a fact no local parish charges more than Orleans at 10%.

Taxes here are based on parish not municipalities.
Kenner and Metairie have same tax rate. I was in metaire.

Their program auto configures tax. So does my POS (Square)
But they have a custom amount.

Where is Lee Zurich?

Rooms to Go has a percentage overage scam going. Lol

Did you use a coupon? Tax is charged on the pre-coupon amount. If you have a 10% of coupon, you would pay more in sales tax than if the item was on sale 10% off.

I know some places that apply the coupon prior to calculating sales tax, which is not correct.

This is the best auto-correct.

They don't charge sales tax on a car's MSRP, do they? Is that what you JBE commies want?

The slippery slope is you getting charged taxes on empty beds and couches you could have AIrBNB'd.

Some areas of St Tammany are designated as economic growth areas and have 10.5% taxes. Pat brister and company passed the tax increase without a vote so I'd bet most wouldnt even know.

There are varying sales tax rates in St Tammany around Mandeville, Madisonville and Covington. I'm not sure what "business zone" or whatever "district" has been set-up, but tax is 10.5% (I think) in some areas and like 9.75% in others. It might be City incorporated vs unincorporated. I can buy the same exact food at the same exact item price at different Wendy's, and the total is a few cents different. That's how I originally noticed it.

$115.67 on 1077.00 is 10.74% tax. I they have $2.5B in sales nationwide and overcharge by 1% on every transaction, that adds up to $25,000,000. Not chump change.

Edit: See the post above mine

I'm a sales tax auditor and I can tell you that there are places that charge more than 10%. Folsom, Sun and even Mandeville are 10.25%. If you are picking up at the rooms to go location in St. Tammany Parish they charge 10.75%.

So an extra percent.

You pay tax on the amount charged. If you paid tax on presale price then every company would use discounts to collect more in tax.
If I sell you a bed for $100 and said it used to be $1000 I can't charge you $100 in tax.

I about walked out of a car dealership in Florida when their "system" had BR proper sales tax at 9.5% and not 9% and wouldn't budge even when I showed them the Parish Finance Office webpage.

Took me another 3 months to get the 0.5% overpayment back.

Oh. So it is legit. Wow is never suspect the conservative haven of St Tammany to have the highest taxes in the area.
That's it. Pick up is in Slidell.

Tax is charged where the transaction takes place. Franklinton in Washington Parish is 10.5% also.

Incorrect

If the item is to be titled (automobile, boat, etc) sales tax is charged on the rate where the item will be titled, if no title, then sales tax should be charged where transfer of possession takes place
