but not when it comes to paying other people.

This is my experience.
I have some friends that are millionaires and they watch their money like crazy, but they are generous with service people of all kind as well as with their friends.

And I haven't really responded to one of these dumbass threads in a while, but my take out orders are different than the average Franks. I order from mom and pop kind of places and my local bar and grill where I visit 2 or 3 times a week. The girls work hard and at the restaurants I'm taking them away from working tipping tables when I call in an order, so I don't mind tipping them.

If your lazy fat arse can't shop and cook your own food, then give your people some money to take care of you.

If you are ordering from Outback or Chili's then do what you need to, but I would think a few dollars isn't going to kill you.

I follow the European model. I refuse to give into the US's bs tip culture, only place in the world to have it. I'm not going to support the owner's role in paying their employees a sustainable wage.

Enjoy your $30 hamburger.

Actually, that's probably not far from true. The people with the most money tend to be very tight with it.

We are talking about tipping the hostess $5, not losing your kids tuition at the craps table

I left a $65 tip today for subpar service. Hope the OT loves me.

Screw them. What other job do you get a full wage and still expect tips? At least you no longer have to subsidize he restaurant, that’s what I hate most about the whole thing. And then they still have the nerve to charge you 10 bucks for a glass of cheap wine.

This is BS. Restaurant prices are outrageous already, they wouldn’t dare raise prices because fewer people would patronize them. I think it would be better though, we all eat out too much.

90% of the time I tip 3-5 dollars. The other 10% of the time I have a moment of clarity and realize I’m picking the food up myself and leave no tip.

For some reason I feel bad.

In a previous thread on this I shared that a guy I know that moonlights as a waiter told me that the owner takes all of the tips for carry out and declares it “payback for breakage” and keeps it himself.

I will still drop a buck here or there but never 15-20%.

Believe me, I share your disdain for the whole practice. I also like the European model and I actually prefer the style of service over there. Too many of them hover on you here.

I live in a small town, and I regularly tip. Since everyone knows it, I get my orders ahead of others, free extra sauces when they normally charge, etc.

In a big town it may not matter that much.

I'm not surprised - friend worked as a waitress in College Station. She said that Aggies were generally bad tippers and obnoxious customers.

$1 at drive through.

I’m honestly insulted it’s on there and just do it so I’m not that guy.

Good read lol

I always tip 10% anyway. I'm too big of a pussy to handle the 10 minutes of shame.

Yeah, but then we'd have to listen to all the OT poors complain why its so expensive to eat out. Restaurant profit margins aren't high. They are able to make money through the tipping system.

If they raise the price to equal the amount of the tip would normally be then what's the problem? Add a dollar per entree for togo and 20% for dine-in. Problem solved and fewer taxes evaded.

I can somewhat understand the paradigm for sit-in dining service, but I find it strange that there's a level of societal pressure to tip someone for packaging your togo order with the stated "reason" that there's care and attention that goes into it, but but there's no tipping mechanics or doctors.

The host could probably spit in your food and forget to include napkins yet you would barely be impacted. However, if the guy changing your oil screws up or if a surgery is botched it could really frick your week up.

Simpler is better, imo.

What do you guys/gals think about those places that use I pads for the registers and then flip the screen around for you to sign and tip?

The only place that I can recall that does this is Fat Cow.
