If they raise the price to equal the amount of the tip would normally be then what's the problem? Add a dollar per entree for togo and 20% for dine-in. Problem solved and fewer taxes evaded.

I can somewhat understand the paradigm for sit-in dining service, but I find it strange that there's a level of societal pressure to tip someone for packaging your togo order with the stated "reason" that there's care and attention that goes into it, but but there's no tipping mechanics or doctors.

The host could probably spit in your food and forget to include napkins yet you would barely be impacted. However, if the guy changing your oil screws up or if a surgery is botched it could really frick your week up.

Simpler is better, imo.

Sounds like a bribe economy to me, this is the norm in Russia, where some absurd percentage of the economy is dark (like the percentage of cash tips extorted for bs service that is expected for service in US restaurants instead of being spent on industries that actually help the US economy instead of contribute to the obesity epidemic from the portions that have become the norm here).

This tipping shite is getting out of hand. Dunkin Donuts coffee shops have plastic tip cups at the drive thru window. Get the frick outta here. Whats next, having to leave a tip for waitresses/waiters? frick society.

It seems like it is only pretty recently that they started putting the tip line on debit receipts at take out places. It seems kind of strange to me but sometimes I'll put a dollar or a few dollars on there.

If the trend continues, pretty soon we'll be expected to tip at the checkout line of the grocery store, department store, hardware store, etc.

Or taco bell, chik fil a, zaxbys, etc etc etc

Meh. I don't tip fast food and on rare occasions, I tip counter-service stuff (fancy coffee, carryout, etc.) - but that's like less than a buck of change or a buck - at most - into the common jar.

It's not necessary, and the server should not feel entitled to a tip for it, but I usually throw a couple bucks their way. I think of it as being more involved than picking a beer bottle out of a cooler, opening it, and setting it on the bar. Chances are the person ringing you up is not even making min wage. It's still a convenience not to have to cook yourself and then clean up afterward.

I'm not sure how that warrants a tip. Unless the order is fricking huge or especially complex.
