I think the collection of the information on Boeings end may have been a secret..

Article I read said Malaysian Air was under contract to send data from engones back to Rolls Royce. Gave me the feeling that normally that info is pinged back to the Airline, but in this case or with this particular airline, Rolls Royce wanted the info 1st

I didn't know it did that and both of my engines on my plane are rolls royce. Maybe its just not talked about, and I don't think we use that feature unless I'm oblivious to it.

That's how we know when you pass over our buoys..Very distinct frequency...

ETA: This is common Google Knowledge, not loose lips

True, I think our acoustics pick up that frequency too now that i think about it

JAX, make sure TD gets the scoop on this thing if you find the plane first. Larry Leo needs something solid to put on the home page.

Chicken, my understanding is that they used the information the engines transmitted in order to figure out exactly what happened in the Air France crash. I don't know that it has been extremely widely known, but I think the layman could have known about it by reading up on Air France.

based on new info coming out...sounds like pilot suicide mission or hijacking:

LINK

quote:

SEPANG, Malaysia — After four days of reticence and evasive answers, the Malaysian military acknowledged on Wednesday that it had recorded, but initially ignored, radar signals that could have prompted a mission to intercept and track a missing jetliner — data that vastly expands the area where the plane might have traveled.

Radar signals from the location where the missing aircraft, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, was last contacted by ground controllers suggested that the plane may have turned away from its northeastward course toward Beijing, officials said. Military radar then detected an unidentified aircraft at several points, apparently headed west across the Malaysian peninsula and out into the Indian Ocean, the head of the country’s air force told reporters. The last detected location was hundreds of miles to the west of where search and rescue efforts were initially focused.

The military took no immediate action on Saturday to investigate the unidentified blips, whose path appeared to take the aircraft near the heavily populated island of Penang, and only later realized the significance of the radar readings.

If on auto-pilot, will the plane do anything special if it runs out of fuel, assuming there is no pilot intervention? eg, will the plane's flaps go down automatically to help it glide better?

Anyone else seen This story?

I hadn't. It would explain why Boeing has been silent and has provided no data about the flight. And if the airline itself was collecting the data you know that is in question.

No, it will stay in the position it was left in. The pilots will still have control though, unless they are unconscious then based on the rate of descent the force will be strong enough to move the flaps in whichever direction it wants

every incident with the 777 so far has been with an airframe with the Rolls Royce engines.

The engine data transmission is commonplace now, especially for a carrier leasing engines under "power by the hour" where they literally lease the engines which are monitored and sometimes maintained by RR. Some companies with smaller maintenance infrastructure find it easier and more economical. The leasing part of it is over 50 years old, just the technology is new so it is common practice now and actually a good thing.

so, if this plane was on auto-pilot, heading southwest from Malaysia, how many hours of fuel did it have left and how fast was it traveling...if you had to guess? It needed enough fuel to get to Beijing.

And when it ran out of fuel, and started to descend, when it hit water, I assume it was not a belly landing...

nope. it will fly until it runs out of fuel then crash like the Payne Stewart plane.

Though putting the plane into best glide configuration would be smart.

Malaysia = complete clusterfrick
ETA: there is no way in hell they just ignored a phantom radar return, they shot it down and will never admit to it.

I think they are conceding that it could have been the plane but they don't know for sure.
