Just in-CNN's Richard Quest reports per Boeing, NO technical data frm Malaysia Air# 370 to suggest plane continued flying for 4 hours
I say it flew into the middle of the ocean and ran out of fuel Payne Stewart style. Maybe not exactly the same, but you know, the running out of fuel part and crashing part.
And since we don't know what direction it was going, good luck finding it. Any slight degree turn changes the end point after 4 hours by a lot of miles.

This whole thing reminds me of this exchange in the movie Under Siege
Tom Breaker: Just last year we found out North Korea was refitting an old French sub to fire anti-ship missile, so we sent Mr. Stranix in.
Admiral Bates: You've been financing this goddamn maniac's private army, and it didn't occur to you it might become a problem?
Tom Breaker: Once we realized we had lost positive control, under Executive Order 136 we tried to neutralize him... we missed.
David Trenton, National Security Advisor: Excuse me, um, this North Korean sub... how do you know he sunk it?
Tom Breaker: [in trembling voice] Oh, we're positive he sunk it. Positive.

FWIW, there are many airports where the tower is not manned 24/7, they will shut down at midnight or whatever, very common in third world areas and even smaller controlled airports in the U.S.. Air traffic can still come into the airport after the tower shuts down, many of them could handle a 777, you could land a 777 in the middle of the night put it in a hanger and few people would notice.

You know, a lot of the "went off in a random direction" theory kind of assume cabin depressurization and every one being knocked out.
What if they started having problems, turned around, and then literally everything turned off, yet they were all conscious and the plane just kept going towards the direction they were pointing when every thing failed?
Everyone on board would have just been hopelessly flying knowing their demise for 4 hours.
That's like being buried alive. Yikes.

That was a few pages ago......currently we're negotiating what the word "indication" means. The leader is

So, you're saying, they're NOT using the one I got to camp out on in 8th grade?

Kind of what happened with Helios several years ago. I read up on it yesterday (didn't even hear about it at the time).

Ya, I still lean towards a plane problem. And I assume there is a technical reason why the scenario I posted couldn't happen.
But what if it could? A flying coffin with everybody awake for 4 hours. Holy shite that is scary to think about.
ETA: I'm aware of Helios, just wasn't sure if this aircraft was designed or not to avoid that entirely. And its super creepy.
