Office White Elephant Gift Party-- Why are people so shitty?

Our office did a white elephant gift exchange today. Small office of 10 people. $25: limit. Some gifts were good, like a couple bluetooth speakers, a case of Shiner, a Yeti mug, etc. Then you get the jackass that wrapped up a $6 Rotisserie chicken and one who gave a bag of Doritos. No lie. I'll give you one guess which political party they're affiliated with.
The 2 people who got stuck with the crappy gifts were pissed and said they'll just sit out next year. I just don't understand. In an office of 10 people, it was pretty easy to figure out who sucks.

I worked at a place for 10 years and we did it every year. One guy was notorious for bringing shitty gifts. We'd all see what gift he brought in and stay the frick away from it.

You can’t let this massive injustice go without taking action. You need to send out a company wide email calling these losers out. Don’t be afraid to have a few drinks prior to writing and sending out the email. Godspeed brother.
