Office politics.. Why are some habits allowed but others frowned upon?

Smokers will take 4-5 15 min smoke breaks per day, and no one bats an eye. A non-smoker will hit the gym during lunch and get back 15-20 min late and catch shite like he's committing an act of treason.

Both are pretty much habits: one is bad and makes the employee smell like stale cigarettes all day, while the other is not.

Any other inconsistencies in the workplace?

Sounds like you should pick up smoking and stop being such a pussy about it

Not only is it not, but will almost always make someone a better employee, I'll wager.

Cig breaks are ok
Pot breaks are only ok if you're the CEO

At my old office we had someone that would show up 5-10 minutes early every day and then spend the first 45-60 minutes in the kitchen, getting coffee and chatting with anyone that walked in. And I'd get looks for being 15 min late.

Let cigarette smokers have one thing. They pretty much commit a slow form of suicide.

At least a healthier employee. I bet the smokers tend to be ill more and miss days because of their habit vs the gym goers.

Also, I'd imagine that a smoker, who couldn't smoke for one reason or another (weather, meetings, whatever..), would be a cranky sob all damned day.

I got one better:

(And no, I haven't done this. Or at least not seen to my knowledge. )

Smoker's breaks.

Vs

Negative stigma out of being seen using your assigned lunch time to take a power nap even though you don't come back late, and instead come back refreshed and more productive.

My guess is they think the person could be snoozing somewhere if they can't find the person at their desk at any point during the day.

I work at a small family owned business and we really do smoke in the office. Owner says it's his fricking building and he'll smoke in it if he wants to.

I mean, what the frick do people want? You bitch about people smoking around you and then bitch because they go outside to smoke.

Yep. Had a guy that would take a 20 minute nap in his work area on his lunch break, he was told if he wanted to sleep, then go to his truck in the parking lot.
