Tis the season for my annual visit to Office Depot. My high schooler starts school tomorrow and needed a couple of things.

How are these stores still open? Unorganized, cluttered, outdated technology. Anyway, as we were checking out, we got a couple spots behind a woman buying an office chair. It was a floor model and the last one they had and it was $70. I know this because a yelling match ensued because Office Depot was charging her a $50 "assembly fee."

I never knew about this, but I get it. But I would assume you'd get charged this assembly fee for using a new in the box item and having them put it together. But buying a floor model that you have no option to buy an unassembled one - I thought about it all the way home and remain perplexed.

The office supply industry has been ravaged by computers and tech as much as any.

I was really hoping for a top ten list interspersed with personal anecdotes and historical vignettes.

That's messed up. Should be cheaper.

I'm assuming it's because they sell stuff that people, yourself included, need to buy.

It’s been that way for years and years. They used to have a decent delivery business, but I have no idea if that’s still the case, especially since half their business used to be delivering copy paper. Offices don’t use nearly as much paper these days.

I get that, but I haven't stepped foot in one in years before today. We had lunch and she mentioned she needed something and it was in the shopping center closest to us.

Its Back to School time and there were like 5 customers in the entire store.

I recently thought the same thing. I believe they mostly run deliveries from online orders

I was a store manager for OD for 12 years. To say that Amazon killed the business would be an understatement. Numerous CEO changes and every one of them wanted to transform the business into a service driven company. The print centers are the biggest profit areas for the retail stores. Computers are sold at a loss (if purchased on sale) and they try to make a profit off selling you computer services (antivirus) and extended warranties.

I still have some friends that work for them. District manager territories have basically doubled. Their main focus is B2B sales via e-commerce

We have a business account for work that I used to order stuff all the time. I've noticed the last few times I've tried to place an order, everything was out of stock. Everyday stuff like toilet paper, paper towels. I figured they went out of business.

I will not order an office chair online. I have to sit in it first. They are not all the same. I also like getting office supplies locally when I need them. One ream of paper lasts me a year. Don’t need a box of it.

I usually get all my products through these guys. Once their new website launches it will be a game changer.

It would take 10-15 minutes to assemble that thing. She should have just laughed at them and walked out.

Dunder Mifflin had trouble selling paper, had to close a branch, and Michael Scott, even when he ventured out on his own, went under as he couldn’t turn a profit.

It’s a cut throat industry.
