Is everyone really just eating too much?

Energy drinks are a huge problem as well. People drink them like water.

Better than nothing I suppose, but um, that is very very light cardio. That will not help anyone lose weight, and does very little, if anything, for maintenance.

I agree 5'11 220 is not obese and could be healthy depending on what kind of weight it is. The running you do though is too light to really be consequential.

It's not like America has a problem with women being too skinny due to societal pressures.

There was an issue for a while it seems. The Kate Moss effect. "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" I think some of the fat acceptance crap is blowback from that era.

Or more accurately translated "Nothing tastes as good as cocaine smells".

I guess I'm going to be the prejudice poster who recognizes a correlation between the increase in illegal immigrants and the rise in obesity numbers in this country.

Most Mexican/Central American women aren't exactly on the thin side.

I'm not saying that is the predominant reason, but it is an underrated source of the growing problem.

his is what happens when you have disgusting fatbodys in bathing suits on magazine covers telling women that it's ok to be obese as long as you "love who you are".

5'11 220 still isn't obese, though it is almost certainly a touch overweight.

Not my size by the way, just commenting on the earlier post.

Come on, now. You don't know this guy's story or why he runs what he runs. For some people new to running or running-averse, this is a step in the right direction. I would argue conquering these smaller distances are the most consequential runs a person can have... because breaking the inertia of inactivity or non-running is harder than adding another mile to a 6 mile run, or 5 more miles to a 30 mile per week load.

add in sugary drinks and it's just too much shite constantly being consumed

sugary drinks are a big one.

when I'm able to completely avoid soda and coffee creamer for a couple months I tend to lose around 10 pounds w/o even adding in exercise or any other diet changes.

but then the office restocks and they slowly creep back into my diet again

sugar is damn near like crack it's so fricking addictive.

Beyond that, you should exercise for health, not to lose weight. People should fix up their eating to lose weight.

Fair point. Didn't intend to be judgmental or condescending.

Isn't BMI a shittastic way to account for "obesity"?

No, for every female body builder with 28 BMi and 10% body fat there is 1000 obese people

How many "fit" women do you know with a bmi of 30?

I work in the healthcare industry and our health insurance requires a physical. They measure BMI and if under 30, it's a 50% discount on the employee portion. We have several women here who say they are considered obese by this scale, but they're anything but fat. Most are tall and muscular.

My best guesses for what's causing this... junk food, sugar, and inactivity.

Young people aren't being taught how to cook for themselves anymore. They are going after what's convenient to them, and that's fast food. They grew up on it, after all.

As an earlier poster said, our foods are loaded with sugar these days.

But I think inactivity is the king of the hill. Some adults think they can eat like they did when they were eight years old, do nothing but sit on their phones and video game systems all day... and not gain weight. The active ones are doing more active things than ever before. But they are outweighed by the inactive ones. These are people who are used to being catered to, and entertained non-stop by instant delivery media. The couch is the real enemy here.

I've heard people reference studies showing sugar is more addictive than cocaine, but not sure how much validity there is to these studies. If true though, I guess we can say " sugar is a hell of an additive!"

you can only burn so many calories

140 calories is in a 12 oz coke. that's like 15 minutes of cardio

This x 1,000,000,000.

Just saw a great documentary about this on Amazon called That Sugar Film. Guy had been on a no sugar diet and was in good health and very fit. Decided to eat healthy, low fat foods for 2 months. He consumed same amount of calories. He gained a good bit of weight, mostly in his stomach, and his blood panel #'s went nuts. Like prediabetic, heart disease etc.

This was eating low fat yogurt, "healthy" cereal, etc etc. He wasn't eating candybars and ice cream. Doctors are saying it's not just calories in and out. It's what kind of calories.
They said if you removed everything with sugar in it from the grocery store, only 15% of items would be left.
