That's true, SFP.
Good eating habits and activity go hand in hand. They reinforce each other.
The reason why I say inactivity is the main problem is that I've never known someone who was active to gain weight (bad weight), but inactive people... they seem to be more prone to rapid weight gain. And it doesn't even have to be people who have really "bad" eating habits. Think of women you've seen go through menopause, or recovering from pregnancy. If they slow down, and keep their old eating habits... look out, man. They get dirty fat, fast.

Blame Chipotle for ushering in fast casual and faux "healthy" eating. Tack on 300 calorie mocha lattes from Starbucks and here we are.
That and brunch. The popularity of brunch among house fraus has added at least 3 points to that BMI. It's an excuse to gossip and pig out on quiches and such.

Isn't BMI a shittastic way to account for "obesity"?
Actually, it's pretty objective and accurate for about 75 to 80 percent of folks. If you think you're an outlier, you probably aren't - unless you're a well conditioned strength athlete, or have a really out of spec bone structure.
It does require a reality check with a waist measurement and perhaps a detailed bodyfat analysis.
But, as far as a fairly easy to calculate number by which to determine the likelihood your weight will negatively impact your health in the upcoming 12 month, 60 month, 120 month period - it has pretty solid science behind it.
The perfect is the enemy of the good, baw. There is no "perfect" and objective measure like this for health. Everyone is - at the end of the day - an individual.

If I weighed my "ideal" weight I would look like a skeleton.

It's not great for males, but the more macro you get the better off it is.
On a micro scale, it has massive issues. The last time I was in the normal BMI range was when the doctors removed part of my lung and didn't really have an appetite for multiple months and had a large chunk of muscle atrophy, and even then I was still technically on the high side of normal.

This.
Once I got off diet soda for the most part, I started just losing weight like crazy. The diet drink's sugar substitutes will turn you into a food craving zombie.

90% of poor black women I see are severely obese.

Thanks for that, but I took no offense to some guy on the internet telling me I don't work out enough. I'm not 100% ok with my weight, so saying that A) Doesn't surprise me or B) offend me.
Even if it did offend me, who gives a frick? Being offended is a personal problem.

6'-3. I've got a large frame, wide shoulders, long waist.
I probably look my best around 220-235.

BMI is pointless. I know "obese guys" that are 210-215 lbs with a 32-34" waist and are very much in shape.

If you notice women and thier mothers, the daughters are always bigger by a nice margin. I think it is a combination of three things.
1. The effect of growth hormone in the meat we eat.
2. Addiction to refined carbohydrates.
3. Refined Carbohydrates are usually paired with fats.
