Obamacare is Coming After Your Craft Beer

As of December 2016, Obamacare dictates that all brewers must include a detailed calorie count on every type of beer they produce. Failure to comply with the new regulations means craft brewers will not be able to sell their beer in any restaurant chain with over 20 locations. Because this is a major market for selling beer, it hamstrings smaller craft brewers if they do not comply.
The Cato Institute estimates the Obamacare calorie labeling requirements will cost a business as much as $77,000 to implement. For larger beer companies, this is a drop in the bucket, but for small, local craft brewers it represents a substantial cost that they must pay. As a result, it creates a significant disadvantage compared to larger beer companies who can better absorb the cost of this new regulation.

Small craft breweries aren't necessarily targeting large chain restaurants to begin with. If I'm understanding this law, why bother with the labeling?

Or... why bother with the law?
If it applies to grocery store chains as well, then it's a bigger issue.

If you're a small brewer who can't afford to pay the $77k, then you're probably not selling at large restaurant chains with over 20 locations. If you're selling at those chains, you can afford it.
I don't see anything wrong with posting calorie amounts. Can only help with decisions with what to drink. It's information I would like to know. Don't like that we are legislating it though.

Those labels aren't already required by the FDA?

plenty are though
I'm sure many won't bother with it, but places like BBW or World of Beer typically have local beer on tap

No, do you ever see nutritional info labels on alcohol? Maybe a Zima or some sort of flavored malt beverage with added sugar, but hardly ever on beer, wine, or liquor.

If you like your beer, you can keep your beer

One more reason to avoid chain restaurants

Yeah, those, plus Flying Saucer probably has over 25. Mellow Mushroom has 150+ locations and a focus on local beers.

Par for the crappy Obama course.

its just more unwarranted legislation that is designed to hurt small businesses

Who goes to drink craft beer and counts calories?
