Started lab mix with allergies out on Blue Buffalo lamb. It was great but expensive. Switched to Diamond Naturals lamb and it was still pretty good. He did seem gassier on it. Just switched again to Costco Kirklands brand lamb which is like $30 for a 40lb bag. Still seems ok.
I will say my parents have always had labs and have always fed them the cheapest dry kibble they could find like Ol Roy. Those dogs have never had problems and lived to be 14 and 15 years old. Do I think all these fancy brands are better? Sure. Does it really matter? I doubt it. Probably all marketing to get dumbasses like me to spend $$$ on fancy dog food

Blue Buffalo. I had a senior dog that had to eat it and my younger dog ended up getting spoiled to it and would only eat the senior dog's blue buffalo. The senior dog died recently and I switched my younger dog to blue buffalo full time. She loves it.

Blue Buffalo

best stuff on the market.

I was under the impression that Innova EVO was. Protein content made my Vizsla shite like yogurt machine though. The stuff is grain free and something like 47% protein. I switched to another grain free food called CORE by Wellness and he did better. I think that one is along the lines of Blue Buffalo. EVO is some serious shite. You can't even keep the Salmon version inside that shite stinks so bad.

I just got off the phone with McFaith Feed & Pet Supply on Paris Ave. They carry Victor food, it's $35 to $38 for a 40 pound bag depending which one you get.

Not far from Metairie... I'm hitting it on my way home from work.

FYI... My pup got some of my older dogs Purina Pro Plan and he's been crapping like a duck the last day and a half. He was weened with Victor Hi-Pro Plus.

Orijen (the best kibble,) Orijen treats, boiled antler for marrow and trachea all from Jefferson feed. My dog is still on the puppy food but when he matures Orijen offers a wide variety or proteins including fish, lamb and bison.

Ok, slick. You point out industry based research discounting anything I posted, then we'll chat.

I stand by my previous statement that Vets don't have the nutrition education most people think they do. Actually do some research and think for yourself and you'll see I'm right.

quote:

Ever think the food manufacturers you are knighting for have the same goal and motivation as Purina, Hills, or any other "big" producer? As for "pushing" a certain product, no reputable vet is selling a product at the expense of the client. it would be practice suicide. You must work for ABC News.

As I said earlier, those bigger companies know what good nutrition is; they just cut corners to protect their margins. Until recently, most people didn't know/care what was in that bag of food. In your wisdom, explain why those foods have corn and wheat as ingredients (listed within the first 5 ingredients of Science Diet) when there is a litany of research that indicates wheat and corn serve no nutritional benefit at all for your dog -- it is simply a cost cutting measure.

If you disagree with what I'm saying, or would like to discredit what I've learned after having a very sick dog and seeking out the people I did simply because of a part time job I had over a decade ago, then there's nothing I can say here to change your mind.

Orijen and Acana are amazing foods. That company (Champion Petfoods)is from Canada and they really know their stuff. You can go to their site and see all of the sourcing information for their meats and vegetables.

Orijen is a bit too protien heavy for my guy, but he loves Acana.

Acana. Made by the same company, champion pet foods, who makes orijen just a little less meat/protein compared to orijen so it costs a little less.

WholePaws (Wholefood brand). I have a 16 yr old lab that has always been a bit of a finicky eater. But about a year ago she stopped eating. Tried numerous things such as rice, boiled chicken, etc. She ate the chicken a little bit but not enough to keep her weight up. Tried the Wholepaws wet food and she loved it. So tried the Wholepaws dry food and she likes that even more than the wet. She is eating again and keeping her weight up now.

I've been feeding the Nutro Max puppy. Next time I buy he's switching to an adult food. I've been looking a little to decide what to go with.
