I feed diamond naturals grain free. I think its lamb and sweet potato. It's not rated as high as blue buffalo and the like, but it was rated pretty well for the $39 a bag price. Rated better than science diet with a cheaper price tag. There are several sites out there that break everything down for you and give a rating

Vets don't get nearly the education on nutrition some think. Pet nutrition specialists (like dieticians for people) know what is idealfor your pet. Also, beware when vets recommend food: like doctors and certain medicines, some vets get incentives to push certain foods from the larger dog food companies.

Those larger dog food companies know what is ideal for your dog because they generally pioneer the research. They do, however, cut corners with ingredients and sourcing to protect their margins. For example corn: it serves absolutely no purpose for your dog. He get's no nutrition from it. Dog food companies use it as filler and a cheap binder to keep the kibble together.

Victor is a great food. My bulldog was on it for a while till he developed a chicken allergy. Skin was great, coat was soft and he didnt shed all that bad.

Raw meat, bone, eggs, etc. Raw is the best if you can afford it.

I'm not a specialist. I worked in the pet care industry in college so I brushed elbows with many. I had a sick dog years ago and could never figure out why (with several vets help) turned out the food they were recommending for him was the culprit.

I learned enough about food for dogs to know that the big labels are generally not ideal (read my first post in this thread). I may be in the minority, but I scrutinize the labels of anything I give my new pup.

I went from pro plan to victor. My dogs like it so far. They seem to act about the same as pro plan.

If in Central, Sullivans hardware has it. They are good people and have fair prices.

Bottom line?
Victor Select dog food is a plant-based kibble using a moderate amount of various named meat meals as its main sources of animal protein, thus earning the brand 4 stars.
Highly recommended.

Victor's select hi-pro plus, ~$40 for 40lb bag (think it is rated 5 stars too). By the second week of weening our dog to it, she was eating around her old food. No stomach issues and seems to have helped with her allergies.

Highly recommend if you can find somewhere convenient to buy it.

I switched from blue buffalo to this from Costco two years ago.
About 30 bucks for forty pounds.

Plant pulps such as beet, tomato, etc. vs. Grains such as soybean meal, corn meal, etc.
