Seeking Penpals

quote:

Nursing home officials say it’s been a challenging time for seniors who have been unable to see their families and friends due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our residents, like residents all over the world right now with COVID-19, have been on lockdown, they’re not getting to see their families,” said Meelbusch-Woods. “We’re hoping that this is a way to connect our residents with people still outside the facility with similar interests, plus, who doesn’t love getting mail that’s not an actual bill?!”

I don't know if this has been posted, but it got my feels going. It has to be tough on many with the visitation restrictions. I imagine this would be of interest to alot of other nursing homes. Maybe it is something that some on the OT would be interested in.

I would hope they would be penpals with their family members who they can't see right now...

They just want someone to talk to

Seems like letters is the worst of ways when they just want daily interaction.

Set up a modern switchboard where people can call in and bullshite with them about the 1960s Dodgers or their latest gardening adventures.

Just post up what they like and have people call in to talk about it.

Some probably do. Others may not have anyone. It also probably doesn't hurt to hear from other people.

I enjoy talking to older folks, though. I like hearing their stories. You can learn alot, too.

That's a pretty damn good idea.

Friend,

I’ve met more friends and pen pals than I have time to manage over the last two months! It has negatively impacted my TD postings, but I feel it is a public service worth doing, so I send each requesting home a copy of this letter. So far I have a near 100% response rate.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Old people are typically lonely as heck under ordinary circumstances...now they are on lockdown and can’t even come out of their rooms to eat or anything like that.

That could be fairly complex in many facilities now since most residents have their own phone and not a wired phone run through the front desk like years ago. They obviously wouldn't want to just give out the residents phone numbers.

Get them cheap Kindles and teach them how to use one. Soon they'll be chatting and emailing their asses off and won't have time for anything else.

Friend,

I didn’t know you were a member of CCC.

I miss my Sunday mornings there.

You joke, but there are definitely people who just stay on cruises because it's cheaper than retirement homes with more amenities.

Can someone cross reference the post on “prison pen pals” to LSUTulane’s letter? Any responses thus far?

That's crazy. Even in the early days the CDC said corona could only live for 3 days on paper and cardboard. Now, they say that it really isn't even an issue.
