WSJ article

quote:

Supply-chain snarls have hit one of the most boring documents in anyone’s filing cabinet—the car title.

“When I first heard of this, I said, ‘What?’ ” recalls Bob Wheat, general manager at Village Ford car dealership in Dearborn, Mich. “It was just a total surprise to me.”

Already, the auto industry has dealt with crimps in supplies of chips, batteries and even the oval blue badges that Ford Motor Co. puts on trucks.

Now, some states are warning that the specialized paper used to print vehicle titles has gotten hard to find. Government agencies are rationing stashes and extending wait times for flummoxed dealers and car owners.

Well we have to import the special trees from China to make that paper so we should have expected this.

Another win the JIT supply chain.

It's almost like nobody predicted any of this.

I paid off my car last month and the bank told me that they would now assign the Virtual Title to me. I had no idea what they were talking about (I'm old) and told them that I wanted a paper Title that I could hold in my hand. After a bit of hemming and hawing they told me that I could have one if I "really wanted one." I really did and to their credit I did receive my paper Title in a couple of days.

Why is this a thing? Just print the fricker on copy paper with a unique identification number.

It’s like people go out of their way to make shite difficult these days.

It's like we're living in a war-time US. Look, we're all accustomed to first world status and amenities. Toning down exorbitance is probably fine. But this constriction is manufactured and not unifying at all. Why do people keep voting for these bureaucratic authoritarians?
