Water temps are also generally very low meaning you are usually dealing with hypothermia in minutes year round on Lake Superior, the other lakes vary seasonally but never get out of the mid-seventies peak summer.

We used to swim at the beach with the “warm waters” when I was a kid. That stopped quickly when I found out the waters were warm because they were the treated water from the sewage plant. (They dump that crap out right by the shore and take water from a few miles out of Lake Michigan for the municipal water supply.)

I’ve helmed charter boats a few miles out and was on the car ferry loaded with military in a really bad storm. I learned to respect even calm water on the boat. Watching The Perfect Storm was damn near the feeling I had on the car ferry. (I’ve also driven out on the ice, fished, and then on the way back seen some poor schmoe’s vehicle slowly slide through the ice.) Any body of water can be as deadly as any other body of water.

I still don't understand why this troll is allowed to post here. I guess it's considered cute.

WTF!? What kind of sorcery is happening out there in November and especially between the 10th and 13th?
Every weather related ship sinking deaths on the Great Lakes happened in this time?

quote:

Nov. 11, 1913: eighteen ships were lost killing 254 people.
Nov. 11-13, 1940: 57 men died when three freighters sank in Lake Michigan.
Nov. 18 1958: 33 men died on Lake Michigan with the sinking of the Carl D. Bradley.
Nov. 29, 1966: Daniel J. Morrell sank in Lake Huron killing the 28 crew members.

Plus this one which was the worst?
Am I reading that shot wrong?

I don’t see dig quotes or pics on my phone, but the best line of the song is “Does anyone know where the love of God goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?”

Gordon Lightfoot must of had ESPN, to write a song about 29 people that died on a ship call Edmund Fitzgerald, 5+ years before 29 people died on a ship called Edmund Fitzgerald.
That’s nothing compared to Lou Gehrig dying from a disease with the same name as him.

I mean, what are the odds???

Nothing is close to the Southern Ocean.

Strong winds in the great lakes can kick up large waves in a very short amount of time whereas the oceans it takes a longer period of time.

Waves in great lakes can be short and steeper and that's the main difference btwn ocean waves.

The wave period is shorter in the great lakes than the ocean.
Where's you may have 10+ seconds between crests in the ocean and around 5 in the great lakes

The combination of waves kicking up fast and high frequency of waves pounding and being steeper led to many great lakes ship wrecks

I was in high school and first heard of it on the morning national news.

The hotel I stayed at had a 20' replica of the Edmund Fitzgerald in the lobby. Superior and Duluth are very cargo ship oriented.

I had an Edmund Fitzgerald Porter from Great Lakes Brewing Co, in Chicago a few weeks ago
