I mean you can cry about it being a dumbing down but giving an animal variant a more descriptive name still makes a hell of a lot more sense than naming it after some random person who wrote about it first.

The long tailed duck apparently used to be called the oldsquaw. Say the old name and most people wouldn't know what you were talking about. Say long tailed duck and you know right away that it's a duck w/a tail longer than the average duck.

You could do this with any group of animals.

You have to respect the expert historical perspective they're bringing:

quote:

"If you have a bird named for a person who was an avowed white supremacist, who preached the inferiority of Black people and it’s found mainly in the South, if people research the history, they’re going to find it offensive,” he said. One example often cited is the Scott’s oriole, named for Winfield Scott, a military general responsible for the Trail of Tears.

So they are digging through a bunch of old dead guys lives and if they did anything against THEIR modern stupid sensibilities, (and of COURSE they will) they will actively work to erase them from history.

That's why they're doing this
quote:

Although the project was initiated in part "to address past wrongs" over links to historical figures known for their support of slavery or genocide of Indigenous peoples, the Society plans to remove all honorific human names. A committee that considered the recommendations noted the blanket removal would avoid potentially contentious value judgments about the character and morality of individuals from the past.

Better change the name of the American Robbin, which isn't a robbin at all. Names involving colors should be stayed away from, as across a species colors can vary dramatically, even to the point the majority of birds of some species don't match their color-related name at all. We can get terribly convoluted if you want. And, I'm going back the the fricking nonsense that is the Red-bellied Woodpecker. That is peak idiocy.

I noticed names that described how the species looked or how it acted in some way were easier to remember than species with an honorific name," she said. Later in college, she became uncomfortable with the general practice of naming other living things after people, she said.

Until she discovers a new bird.

Oh for frick's sake.
Whites are the only race that gives a shite about nature (Japanese too)

If you have to

quote:

put forth the effort to figure out

Then it isn't

inappropriately named

Now, if you have a bird out there with a hard R in the name, the complainers have a point.

It has a slight red tint on its belly. Maybe questionable in terms of being descriptive but not exactly problematic.

frick these articles, give me a list of the names instead of me reading through a bunch of absolute horseshite to try and find them. Plus the breaking up of website articles with ads is one of the top daily annoyances.
