Naming birds after people is kind of dumb since if really gives you no idea about what the bird really is or looks like. The new names will now reflect actual characteristics of the birds in question.

One of the examples given is a rename that already happened. The long tailed duck apparently used to be called the oldsquaw. Say the old name and most people wouldn't know what you were talking about. Say long tailed duck and you know right away that it's a duck w/a tail longer than the average duck.

how's about you learn about birds the old fashioned way? or does everything have to be dumbed down?

Doesn’t matter anyway, birds aren’t real.

I mean you can cry about it being a dumbing down but giving an animal variant a more descriptive name still makes a hell of a lot more sense than naming it after some random person who wrote about it first.

Not offensive since it refers to Kamala.

the AOS renamed a small prairie songbird found on the Great Plains to “Thick-billed Longspur.” The bird’s original name—honoring John P. McCown, an amateur naturalist who later became a general in the Confederate Army during the U.S. Civil War—was perceived as a painful link to slavery and racism

Rex means king in Latin. America is anti king. Why do you hate America???

maybe the complainer's flesh doesn't resemble the bird's flesh. Therefore, of course...racist.

Without any idea of what the bird looks like, I would lean towards this. The notion of something being “flesh” colored has drawn some ire recently as the specific “flesh” in question is usually peachy.

What about the woodcock? I mean that a very misleading and insulting name.

Are they going to rename the northern parula or any of the other birds that don't have a descriptive name? Or are they just using that as an excuse to remove names?

New bird names will favor more descriptive names like the blue-footed booby or red-headed woodpecker rather than nebulous names like Ross' goose or Bachman's sparrow that give no clues about how to identify the bird.

This actually makes sense

Exactly. The Great Blue Heron isn't blue. The red on the belly of a Red-bellied Woodpecker is difficult to see because it's so miniscule.
