Imagine sitting in jail, knowing you should be a free man by the letter of the law and order of a judge, and not being able to leave the jail for months because they just haven't gotten around to it.

How could a person not get so pissed and retaliate by doing something that would get him more charges?

Ah, Louisiana.....

What a bastion of small government conservatism.

So proud to live here.

I've never understood this. Defendant is in the courtroom. Judge releases them...why in the absolute hell can they not step off into a side location, change their clothes...and leave?

How much state money - and local tax money - do you think is pissed away on jail issues like this one?

I know this is a stretch, as there are many contenders, but I believe the SINGLE most corrupted part of Louisiana politics is how local sherrif's want to keep their jails full in order to get the per-diem rate and justify their empire of employees and tax dollars.

Because who ever is in charge of this is probably employed by the state and....well....have you ever seen state jobs done correctly and/or efficiently?

Is there a reason why the inmates that are being kept too long aren’t speaking up? Do they not know they’ve been freed?

I assume that if I was in jail, I would know, to the second, when I would be allowed to walk free.

We should do this. But we would have to have a system in place that can immediately determine and ensure there are no other cases, sentences, etc, that would required continued detention. Of course, we should have such systems in place now.

Not to get all Political Talk on here, but if the liberals in this country would stop worrying about what bathroom people use, and instead shine a light on issues like this, honestly they would get a lot more support.

The article is kinda long, but in it, it shares the stories of several inmates, who did indeed speak up and ask why they are not free. In one of them, the judge caught wind of what was happening, and it still didn't get fixed. Attorneys call, etc, still doesn't get fixed.

quote:

Around this same time, a concerned friend contacted Buras to say that Grant was still incarcerated. The judge called Gusman and the Madison warden to alert them about the situation, but nothing happened. She then held a hearing July 18 – more than two weeks after she had asked for a quick release for Grant – in which she vacated the sentence and replaced it with “credit for time served.” DOC and LaSalle still did not release him. Buras made one final round of calls to DOC officials July 25. Two days later, and 27 days after he was sentenced to time served, LaSalle officials finally released Grant. They dropped him off in Madison Parish with a bus ticket back to New Orlean

I got wrongfully arrested for a DWI once. Blew a 0.0 but the cop said he could sense something wasn’t right. Charges got dropped. However, spent 18 hours in jail, almost lost my job, and had a lot of explaining to do before I was set ‘free’. Not even an apology was given.

Why is this up to the liberals to get angry about and expose?

Seems "small government conservatives" should be pretty pissed about this as well.

In general, when you have a question like that in this state, you either need to see who stands to lose money or who feels they're not getting paid enough.

Absolutely. Just saying that sometimes, groups that portend to represent the "downtrodden" don't have their priorities straight.

Generally speaking, most companies in this country will do whatever they can to maximize revenues/profits. "Doing the right thing" just isn't on their radar.

If there were no regulations whatsoever on chemical plants and refineries, how much pollution would we have?

Same applies here. Yes, there are people that financially benefit - specifically, the people who run the jails and get the per diem money. But that's why we have to have policies and procedures and regulations to make sure they aren't just fleecing the state.

We have tons and tons of government employees and tons and tons of policies and procedures yet shite like this is allowed to happen.

Pretty amazing that you can be sitting here thinking about sushi and bam Facebook has figured out how to get a computer to read your thoughts , find a list of sushi restaurants in your area and convince you that it's completely normal that your little phone read your thoughts, but the fricking government can't figure out a computer system that reliably makes sure people are released from prison when they are supposed to be?
