You better apply....

You never know what kind of douche could get the job and make your life miserable.

s this where we've come to? I don't want to be a leader because "it's tough"? OP stinks of beta.

Not once do I say the job was too " tough" for me. I can do the job and have filled in in his absence before.
I said it was a huge pain in the arse and would take time away from my family.
I have no clue what a beta is.
Must be something you young'ens call each other these days. I'm a man! I'm 40!!! lol

Yes, you should do it. Do you want to stay where you are for the rest of your career?

Do it. Create new processes to minimize headaches.

Even if that means you really work 60 hours a wk instead of 40? And you live out of town during the week? To me my time and piece of mind was worth way more than the extra pay. I don't mind working overtime sometimes when we need to get something out the door, but I'll never take another job where it's an indefinite condition of the job.

Considering I have my company laptop and phone on me all the time as well as have to fly out to Seattle here and there, im pretty freaking efficient at what I do. I also can work from home and hold meetings over webex there too. So when 40% pay bump comes my way (for me that would be roughly 34k) , that is a significant lifestyle change that I would gladly accept in return for not only moving up in the corporate world but also making a name for myself within that said world.

I'm going to be in a similar position in about a year. My biggest reason for leaning towards applying is because I'm worried about what kind of yahoo they will hire if I don't. We've had some real doozies over the years. I'm not looking forward to having to deal with more personnel issues either.

Man don't listen to half these people. If you are happy with the money you make now and like your job and are pretty sure you wont like your new position then stay where you are its really that simple as long as you realize it may hurt you for future promotions.

It's sounds like a huge leap from fry cook to crew leader but I think you should go for it.

I would imagine so. But I'd talk to your outgoing boss about it a little more. His bosses might think you lack drive if you don't even apply.

This. It's fine if you don't want the job, but be aware that turning it down may have some consequences. They may see you as not having ambition, or not being a team player. Especially if they are indirectly offering it to you, which it sounds like they might be.

Please don't listen to all of these 25 year olds with no life experience and no family.

Sounds like your gig is pretty sweet as is. HOWEVER...the young'ens make one good point...

If not you, then who? You don't want to be working for Dwight K. Schrute.

I'm with you. My only advice would be to communicate openly and honestly with the powers that be in your situation. Do as much as you can to make them understand where you are coming from. Don't stay silent and allow them to project on you. If you don't apply and don't express your reasons, it's true that you could be perceived as not caring or scared/timid.

If I were you, I would at least apply to show them that the position doesn't "scare" me. You never know where the conversation might go from there. Who knows...if you apply and start a conversation, your concerns about the potential headaches of the job may lead them to re-structure or something in an effort to make it more attractive to you.

Don't listen to anyone who would dog you about not wanting to make more money. It's your freaking life. So it's solely up to you what amount of money makes you happy. Judging someone's value or ambition by how much money they make is childish bullshite.

I'm a fairly low-maintenance person who doesn't care about lots of luxuries. I'd much rather make 75K working a true 40-45 hour week, than make 125K putting in 60-70 hour weeks.

Congratulations. You will never move up in that company again. Any further promotions will be from you switching companies

I'm in Outside sales, my base is close to my base. But with my commission structure I actually earn more than he does - it's pretty significant. They earn a small commission based upon my sales.
I enjoy my freedom-

So you are scared of more headache and responsibility and do not want to make more money?? WTF? Good luck if you ever find a woman to marry and ever have kids. ALWAYS apply for your boss's job when they leave. If you don't his boss will think you will never be management material because you lack the drive to better yourself. Quit being a pussy and go for it.

Is there any chance that the new hire could affect the situation that you have now? I've seen it before where people are perfectly happy and effective but a new manager comes in and their style just doesn't fit. Micro managing, taking credit for the successes while assigning blame for the failures, throwing people under the bus, getting involved in things they shouldn't and just generally making your job more difficult than it needs to be. One thing is certain, your situation is going to change with this new hire, whether that is good or bad.
