I heard the most ridiculous stereotypes of alleged Southern racism from a former roommate from Cleveland. Meanwhile, he would drop n-bomb after n-bomb behind closed doors.
The dishwasher dude had a son who recently took a job in Durham and was telling us that his son was having trouble adjusting. Then he threw in the Durham is racist bit. So here's a NJ guy telling us, an interracial couple who just relocated from Durham, that where we came from is racist. He had difficulty processing it when we told him he was wrong. It goes against his learned biases.

No way. America is the only country in the history of the world to have slavery and racism. Also the only country in the world that fought a civil war. Racism founded this country and thrives today. It informs every decision or action that every citizen here makes unless you vote democrat.
Or so I've been told.

Well in the south, we are very diverse, and have many different races and cultures living here. Up north, it’s nothing but white people. North is racist

I used to purposely take him to restaurants in Old South Baton Rouge and Plank Road just to watch how nervous he’d get around black folks. That yank hailed from some lily white ritzy segregated suburb, but wanted to lecture us dumb southerners on racism. Dude could barely talk to black people he was so scared of them.
a lot of northerners don't actually think the south is racist or don't care, they just think they're above you and use racism as the club to beat you with. If it wasn't racism they'd find something else.
Not totally related but one issue is that the only southerners a lot of these upper class whites in the northeast meet are the ones that were desperate to leave the south. So they come up here and basically say all the stereotypes are true (because they hate and are ashamed of where they come from) and the whole thing gets worse. (I'm speaking from personal experience on that to a degree so maybe it's not as bad as I think but it's def prevalent)
It's dumb and sad but if anything it's getting worse. Northern and coastal liberals hate "the confederacy" more than the actual union guys who fought against it. Because it's not the confederacy they hate...it's you, the white southerner.

And it’s Pakistani mate... paki probably isn’t the best thing to say to a Pakistani ...ha!
Is that like the British equivalent of the n-word?

Yep, and it's a lot more overt than here in the South.

rural isn’t the right word as only ~ 20% of Americans live in rural areas.

Hell there are different Southern (American) accents. A Carolina Piedmont drawl is different from an Alabama drawl.

Yup yup! Strong northern accents really aren’t nice.
Most Americans think everyone in England sounds the same for the most part, but if you have ever watched Prince Charles interviewed by the BBC his accent and manner of speech is night and day different then how he sounds when interviewed by American media.

The divide in America is much less north and south than people here would like to believe and much more urban areas vs rural areas in ways of thinking. Those farmers in the northern states have much more in common with you southerners than you'd like to believe.
Look at voting. It's a sharp contrast between urban and rural across the country.

Er... we have black people too would you believe... and the same use of language... the n word is used over here just as much as over there.
The term paki is derogatory towards Pakistanis...so in that respect it’s similar.
But i don’t think you can compare the 2 words as cross continental equivalents.....Black people and Pakistanis are completely different culturally.
This might be me and my own perceptions but I think a person of Pakistani heritage would consider themselves Pakistani English... where as a black personality would simply see themselves as English.

Yeah you can actually understand him and all the Beatles for that matter.

quote:I was defining it as sub 1 mil metros. Obviously, it's not perfect, but if we assume the country is roughly split 50/50 politically, the top 50 metros in the country (all 1 mil+ population) make up about half of the population of the country. Now, there are going to be people who live in those metros that aren't left leaning, and there are going to be people who live in smaller metros that are left leaning, but I think that's the closest way to define the split.
depending on how you define it, I think they’re far more evenly divided but will tend to lean blue. The bigger cities and their immediate suburbs are very dark blue.

I don't have much exposure to it, but I tend to agree. It's not exactly the same as what you're talking about, but that accent Billy Connolly has really makes me want to drop-kick a ferret and maybe terrify some schoolchildren, just to attain a modicum of catharsis. I'd rather listen to a malfunctioning fire alarm.
