Sounds like is a mirror of private sector jobs.

Most have forgone pensions

Pensions for public employees need to end tomorrow. New employees need to be put into a traditional retirement like private sector, with some employer match.

If a private sector employee can go and ask for raises, no reason a fire department can’t do the same.

Irrelevant due to y’all have more firemen and manned stations to respond. Your average fireman can make the same amount of calls if not more from a much smaller department than y’all do.

Huge red flag with hiring issues like that. Not all fire departments practice that, I don’t get it. Just an awful way of hiring

When you’re forced to clean up bum feces, board up blighted homes, pick up trash in lots, pass out lightbulbs in Neighborhoods, you can ask.

This is typical among all paid fire departments nowadays

Pretty much every job asks you to do things that you feel are beneath you.

Understand this is the same NOFD that pissed away their pensions investing in golf courses then needed the bail out.

Their leadership isn't going to give up that cash slush fund to allow their members more control over their retirement.

IIRC that was a state issue with the retirement system. NOFD may have done that also in a separate issue, but I know the Louisiana firefighter fund back in the 90s lost a lot of money on golf courses and real estate.

The NOFD has their own pension board that is a hotbed for questionable shite including bad investments and paying disability claims for people who are not disabled.

I'm sure it is someone elses fault though.

I don't blame the firefighters themselves, but the union is clearly not working for them. They need to clean house.

I am pro-union, but it pisses me off to no end when I see unions stop working for the members and start acting like a two-bit mafia.

There were bad investments and those responsible for making those decisions, McConnell being one of them, have been replaced on the pension board.
However, make no mistake, there was no bailout. The money the city had to come up with were the contributions that previous mayoral administrations were required to make to the fund but had failed to do so.

I don’t disagree. But look at who you’re discussing this with. Someone who voted to overhaul the pension board to make better investments, contributes more and for a longer period of time. Also, I’m not disabled, nor am I, trying to take money for a false claim. The guys asking for fairness are not in the group you’re talking about.
I think what you need to understand is we have a contract, we provide for the citizens.. when you’re asked to do duties subject for another department, but you’re leaving areas undermanned to complete, who’s the one getting screwed? Maybe the lady who died in a fire on thanksgiving because the nearest fire crew was downtown babysitting the collapse.
We’re doing this for the safety of the citizens as well, remember that.

No doubt.

I am just not convinced your enemy is the city, or NOFD leadership, as much as your own leadership.

Sounds like they should pay more in order to expand their workforce and/or reduce the amount of service that they provide. It's not magic. You hire people and provide services. If you don't want to pay for the service then you don't get it. Otherwise you're just going to burn everyone out (pun intended.)

And from the rank and file I know, the dissatisfaction starts on his watch.

Lack of leadership starts at the top, and he is the Superintendent, the top of the Fire Department.

Hearing firemen complain about being underpaid is annoying.. these guys work, what, 2 or 3 days a week? Plus, I’d say 75% or more of those 3 days is spent lying on the couch. Ample time to get a second job to make ends meet

Plus, let’s be honest, being a fireman isn’t exactly skilled labor.. do you even need a high school diploma to get on?

As others have pointed out, the fire department gets called out for lots of BS not related to fires because the shitty police force is understaffed and full of dumbasses. Lot's of drug overdoses, wrecks, and shootings end up being fire department call outs.

Witnessed a junkie get hit by a car and NOPD waited for Fire/EMS to get there to handle it in the Marigny. NOPD didn’t even want to touch it.

Mayor Ghana seems to be relishing crapping all over the firemen...

“We’ll be great through Mardi Gras, we will not have to pay any overtime to our firefighters,” Mayor Cantrell said. “And it actually saves the city money while we are keeping progress and the work going. So, it seems to be a win-win...we are in a good place."

Idk how it is in NOLA but my dad was a firefighter and worked 24 hours on, 48 off. Sure they may be sleeping at night but they're still required to be there 48-72 hours a week and they have to respond if a call comes in at 2AM, some nights they may not get sleep at all.

Stop being a dumb arse and do some research.
