Okay.
Well check the numbers during Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, etc and let me know, because I may be off.

The public has no clue how much the firefighters hate McConnell. Every single one of them. No exceptions, black, white, chiefs on down.

I was fortunate to leave when I was able.

I don’t want to leave a job and place I love. Just want to be treated fairly.
I’m sure you made the best decision for you and I respect that.

VOLUNTEERING

I get the frustration with staffing, but if the voluntary over time counted towards retirement like mandatory overtime would that be a fair compromise?

Turn EMS over to private agencies like Acadian, eliminate NOFD ambulances and cut the FD to a third of its current size. Let's see how the union likes that.

NOFD does not run ambulances. Only fire departments in the state that do are Shreveport, Bossier, and Ruston. Trust me, you do NOT want a private ambulance service over a fire based one.

This is a fight in private sector as well. It compounds quickly so the result will be to eliminate the OT.

The union is happy because there is only one way to eliminate OT...more dues paying members. Which means more income for the union.

Are NOFD union dues calculated on base or overtime?

I don’t think you understand how a Fire Union is built.

But let’s assume you’re accurate.

The city and Mitch changed our pensions system.
Prior we contributed 6% each pay. At 23 years you stopped putting into the pension and at 30 years you could collect 100%.
We now are at 10% and contributing for 30 years.

New employees hired after 2016 have to work 40 years to receive 100%.

How do you think that is going over with people who wanted to become firemen? Or people who get hired and realize they can’t survive on $10 an hour while putting into the pension for 40 years?
They are leaving left and right.
Prior to Katrina we had 1200 Firefighters. 5 years ago we had almost 800. We have 500 now.

There are NFPA standards on manpower. It is a dangerous job, we provide emt medical care 65,000 times a year, and a ton of other duties. It’s not appropriate to run with 3 men on a truck because they cannot staff properly. It’s more strain, stress on those people. And it puts the public in a predicament.
Just because OT is available doesn’t mean people don’t have other jobs to attend, kids, families etc. No one should be forced to spend 100+ hours per week away from their families.
I could go on and on but hopefully you have a better understanding of why the city is so short handed.

Sometimes you just have to stand up for yourself and others until things change. This is how we do things.

Sounds like is a mirror of private sector jobs.

Most have forgone pensions, which would be a huge advantage and bargaining chip for the union, they are usually too dense to relize this though. The leaders of the union are vested and see the pension as a lifeline.

Workout contribution to the public sector 401k equivalent, forget what they are called. You can take that when you leave.

It doesn't sound like covering OT was an issue. It was all voluntary and was being covered. There is more to this story and you either don't want to share or have a reason for not sharing. Trust me, lots of experience with this type of thing and when union leadership starts taking money out of members pockets there is a bigger storyline.

I don't doubt yall do. And yall do it for a paycheck. You can't ask for more money and ask me to play a violin for your sacrifice to the public.

It is a noble profession, you deserve credit, what you are saying just doesn't pass the smell test.

I can ask for more money when the study made by an outside company says we’re 43% below the average. When the council agrees we deserve more money and then for 8 months the mayor ignores our phone calls.
When the S&WB is receiving raises while flooding the city, something isn’t right.
When you’re making 59,000 more calls than your neighboring fire departments, but 40% less money, you can ask.
When guys who take promotional test are scoring in the top 3, but passed over by guys in the 120’s, you can question.
When you’re trying to provide the best help possible with 3 guys, and the citizen deserves 4, pays for 4, you can ask.
When you’re forced to clean up bum feces, board up blighted homes, pick up trash in lots, pass out lightbulbs in Neighborhoods, you can ask.

I could go on and on and it probably won’t make sense.. but it does to us. So we stand up for ourselves and want fair treatment.

You understand why your union should be trying to get rid of pensions then.
