Why don’t they just tear this place down?

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Fire Department is reporting that the abandoned naval base in the Bywater neighborhood caught fire once again Sunday.

The NOFD says the one-alarm fire is still being secured. As of now, there have been no injuries reported from the fire.

The base has been abandoned for years but has been a prominent area for vagrants in recent years. The base has caught fire numerous times over the last handful of months.

City is such a shite hole. Sad, but not surprising the opportunity to get a 21st century city was squandered after Katrina.

If the city is gonna leave all that abandoned like that, it’s gonna be impossible to keep people out

Better yet, why don’t they fix it up and market it to some large company that needs lots of office space? Oh yeah, because it’s in the ghetto (New Orleans), and the natives……well, just because of the natives.

Not exactly much of a market for large companies in need of office space these days.

Teedy will use this as an opportunity to plan a trip to Barcelona for a conference on proper fire fighting

It that base what they called the MEPS station back in the late 80s/early 90s? Where they sent you before you went to boot camp?

I’ve been thinking about starting a company based around the procurement of goods via marine mergers and acquisitions. It’s a sort of “legacy profession” and I think this might be just the right kind of real estate I need.

Pic of future corporate headquarters:

ETA: On the job training will be conducted in the Garden District starting at 11 p.m. Potential applicants must bring their own hammer.

Look at Haiti. They had an Earthquake in 2010 and it looks like it happened last week.

The reason New Orleans stayed the same is the same reason Haiti has not been cleaned up.

it also struck me as bizarre that place hadn't been turned into some kind of mixed used condos or something

it has to be an absolute shitshow inside with a ton of asbestos

It really can't be renovated at this point, it needs to be completely torn down.

Didn’t they just celebrate doing a sweep of this place and it was now secured?

I think Building 2 may also have structural issues from concrete not being maintained.

Its at the end of the Bywater at the corner of Poland Ave and Chartres, on the River. If you've ever been to Bacchanal, its across the street.

It was a massive Navy/Federal complex that shutdown quite a few years ago now and was bestowed to the city to tear down and redevelop.

Instead they went with the plan to turn it into an abandoned building that became such a haven for homeless and drug addicts that it had its own name among that population: The End of the World.
